FMCA gets it?

This video came across my screen this morning. I have never had much use for the FMCA. my encounters of them over the years as a group has usually left me with the impression of old grouchy people in big coaches looking down( literally and figuratively) at the rest of us. A trip to a FMCA Perry rally 3 years ago did little to change that impression. Therefore I (and my wife too) got a chuckle out of this video this morning

I joined when the 4 letters had meaning. Now I only join because it is required in order to join a chapter to participate in our small owner’s rallies, which we enjoy.

That’s all I dare say.

My bad for painting with a broad brush. I know some good people who are members and I have encountered a couple of the smaller chapters that were more inclusive.

I think they get it. They have now included any RV. They should be around awhile.

Seems their road service program is coming up on top in user surveys even over Coachnet. We need to decide whether to quit Coachnet and go to FMCA in a couple months. Comments?

I am personally of the opinion that FMCA shot themselves in the foot when they opened up to all type of RV's, and not just motorhomes a couple of years ago. I don't mean this to sound like I am discriminating against towable owners, it is just motorhome owners have some different concerns on a lot of points, and the FMCA was a group for this, which it no longer is.

The FMCA has other issues, it seems there is way too much push towards monetizing so called discount programs that are targeted at the membership, vs implementing plans that would be beneficial to the membership. In other words the FMCA is not about what can we do for RV owners, and is more about what can we market to RV owners.

The "monetizing" is what helps keeps your dues reasonable. If you can benefit from some of the discount programs that are offered, what is the matter with that?

So, the question is: What "plan" would you suggest that would be "beneficial" to the membership?

What about the FMCAssist program, is that worth your $50/yr dues?

I dumped FMCA because they weren't responsive to what I wanted. First, I couldn't join until I had a motorhome. How am I going to learn from "their" experience if I have to plunk down my money to buy a rig before I learn from their "experts"?

Then I was happy to join both the Cat Club and the Beaver Club, smaller groups inside the FMCA umbrella. The Cat club decided that they didn't have enough members paying additional money so they became a generic engine Club so everyone had to wade thru all the other engine choices to pick out what applied to them. The discount which many of us enjoyed by being a member of the Cat Club, then went away as we were no longer an exclusively Cat club.

Then the Beaver Club decided that my screen name Bucks 2, wasn't my "name" and they took it upon themselves to change my screen name to suit their new rules which required my screen name to be my name. ( I'll wait while you go look to see my name is Ken Buck) Tough to figure out who I was huh?

As you'll notice on most of their forums they have their experts which know it all. Those experts will tell you there is only one way, theirs, to do any particular job. Their followers will pose a question, ignore all answers until the expert speaks (often saying what someone else already said) and then thank the expert for their advice.

When I bought tires, I found that the dealers I shopped at were more than willing to give me the same price as the FMCA price, no blank credit authorization required. I bought tires from a dealer that offered me fleet price which was lower than FMCA's. Maybe buying 8 tires at a time made me a fleet buyer?

So I dropped my membership when I couldn't find any benefit to paying them. Life moves on.

The issue many have is that FMCA was created to cater to the interests of Motor Coach Owners. Hence the name, Family Motor Coach Association. I corresponded with Jon Walker when the agenda was being pushed to include towables. By definition FMCA was an exclusive club. What’s wrong with that?

One of my suggestions was to increase the annual membership fee to reflect the actual cost of providing the benefits. Novel idea, isn’t it? In general it is a fairly affluent group. Would $10-20/yr really cause a drop in membership? Probably not, especially if as much effort was put into informing the membership of the reasons why as was put into pushing for the inclusion of towables.

Another idea was to create a separate chapter, division, sister corporation, or whatever legal decides makes sense, for towables. An idea that came up at a chapter rally was to eliminate certain benefits as part of what is included in the basic membership fee and make those benefits available for an additional fee.

The narrative for inclusion and diversity really came across as disingenuous. It felt like a membership drive. And if anyone believes the group is now more inclusive or diverse just take a glance at the 2 page spread of elected officials.

What does this prove?

I’d say that it shows a lack of diversity.
