The scumbags are also taking your VIN (Vehicle Indentification Number) posted in the lower left corner of your windshield and using that number to create an ID for the stolen car they're trying to sell. You'll never know until one of the two vehicles is sold or crashed at which time you'll have to prove your's is the correct car.

Even though it's illegal, you can put an obstruction of some sort over the ID tag so they can't read it. Just explain to the patrolman why it's there.

Just get some security-type screws and replace the existing ones with those, making it more challenging for a thief to remove the plates if they don't have the special driver for them.

I don't understand the pump and run tactic. I haven't seen fuel pumps where you didn't prepay or use a card to pump fuel. Maybe I live in a bubble

Also the Snopes article says "this is not a widespread problem". Been going on for years and is mostly for moving stolen cars. The sky is falling!
