Generator Use
I live in Central Pa. With Sandy approaching I was wondering how long you have run your generator? If our power goes out, I start the generator and be all set. With a full tank I figure it should run about 6-7 days. So how long have you run your generator for?

I was told that the generator was made to run. That said we run it every day when we're not on shore power, including when we're on the road. Longest single run has been about 16 hours, but Onan says "Run it," so you should have no trouble. Remember, though, that the service interval is 150 hours and a week is 168. Keep an eye on that, and watch your levels.

If your coach is like most, yes, you have six or seven days of generator fuel in the tanks. However, do you know the lube oil consumption rate for an absolute fact??
If no, then plan to shut the unit down about once a day for 5~10 minutes to look it over and check the oil level.

We went 4 days once without power at the house and used the motor home gen to keep the 2 fridg's going. No problems, just be sure to check oil daily.

When we tailgate at college football games in the late summer our Onan has ran for over 48 hours straight.
But you should get one of these... Auto transfer switch, connected directly to natural gas.

Thanks for the information on the oil, didn't think of that. I hope it won't get that bad. It's raining pretty good at the moment, not so windy, yet!

I sure wouldn't count much on natural gas being available, in a large scale weather emergency - both electricity AND natural gas delivery are affected in major disasters...

We're in RI and have been feeling the winds since early this morning. I ran out abut 1/2 hour ago to grab a couple quarts of 10W-30 in case we need to run the motorhome generator for a few days, and the gas station at the top of our neighborhood is OUT of fuel. Two islands, with 2 double sided pumps - so 8 pumps in all, and no fuel. They don't expect to get fuel again until Wed or Thurs.
Sure glad I went out on Saturday http://www.irv2.com/forums/f64/peopl...ss-141298.html and put 35 gallons in the Motorhome.

During the big blackout in August 2003 we lost power for 72 hours straight, us and some 55 million other people.
Our natural gas never faltered once and several neighbors with NG generators had no issues either.

We are connected directly to natural gas, not above ground bottles.
The only real problem would be some type of damage to a protection valve under the ground due to a earth quake - not many of those in Central PA.

Scott -
It is headed your way. The winds have just picked up significantly here in Harrisburg about 30 minutes ago.
