It happened again yesterday along the same stretch of southbound 287. If I forgot to mention, I was driving my pickup truck. This time traffic was moving along AT the speed limit, when all of a sudden the big slow down and cars diving left and right because of a slow car in the center lane. As I passed on the right I could see her looking at something as she was driving. Just as I got by, she must have realized the problem, she was causing so she quickly jumps into the LEFT lane. And she stayed there until I couldn't see her anymore.

Is this a lack of consideration, perception or just no intelligence whatsoever?

Most of the time I don't mind doing that since I'd rather have him pass me safely than create a hazard by riding my bumper waiting for a chance to pass. I view this "left lane issue" the same way. Why should I insist on my right to be in the left lane if other people want to go by faster? If they want to speed why is it my responsibility to prevent them from doing so? All you're doing by planting yourself in the left lane is creating a hazard that results in unsafe driving maneuvers to get around you. That's counter productive.
That, while often practiced, is against Texas state law. A cousin, while enroute to their winter destination in the RGV, drove onto the highway shoulder to allow a faster car to pass. That passing car proceeded to pass him, then turn right into their driveway. My cousin broadsided them, TX highway patrol arrived and immediately ticketed him for driving on the shoulder, and causing an accident.

Wonder what they do there if the doofus in front is fiddling with their cell phone or, like so many of our American drivers, looks in the rear view about once every half hour?

I decided not to read every post so If I am repeating another post I'm sorry.
NJ enacted this law . The left lane is not a travel lane , it's for passing. I hate driving through Virginia, NC and SC it seems everyone wants to drive in the left lane no matter the speed they are going . NJ found most accidents are caused by change of speed, not speeding . If a car is driving above the speed limit and the lane is clear theres no reason for a wreck .

I don't know and wouldn't want to find out! They won't pass on the right, so I assume that the horn would start to blow along with their lights if you didn't move over. The only time I drove on the Autobahn I was doing ~100 mph (miles per, not kilometers) and a gal in a sportscar came up behind me fast doing at least 120. She was flashing her lights before she even caught up with me!

Not alone

This just came across a social network.
We aren't the only ones discussing the topic of traveling in the left lane for extended periods.

It doesn't matter if you're going the speed limit. You may feel like you're doing the right thing by slowing a speeder down, or you may feel it's your RIGHT to drive in any lane you 'darn well please.'

You're not. It's not.
And you ARE breaking the law.

Here's how it is DESIGNED to work:
You're in what you think is just like any other lane except that it's 'fast'. Someone approaches you from behind at 64mph (and you look down to see you're going 57mph and you switch to your smug 'justified' face because the sign says 55). While rather close in proximity, the driver begs you to move over.

Oh, how you should.

But you don't.

The driver tries to be patient and now cars start lining up behind both of you. There's a quick flash of the brights, (Which means the driver would like to pass) and if you look up from your phone you either move over, or your ego decides that you'll be stubborn (and in some cases actually slow down ON PURPOSE). In most cases you don't even notice the signal (flash to pass) but you just start complaining about the guy riding your bumper.

Now there's four or five vehicles lining up behind you while you have a LOT of distance ahead of you and enough room to move over. Now the sixth vehicle back finally jets across two lanes of traffic to go around not only you and the cars behind you, but but also around the slower cars in the two lanes to your right, only to find that there's no GOOD reason for you to be IN THE WAY.

Note that he used the 'SLOW' lane to do this in and dangerously passes on the right.

Move over. You don't have to be stubborn. It's not your lane. You don't have to be self-righteous. Please be part of the solution. Don't cause traffic jams and contribute to road rage.

There's no doubt that many of these idiots who hog the left lane do indeed do so because they feel it's their right to slow down dangerous drivers exceeding the speed limit.

But nowadays, I think it's just as likely that you'll come up behind some complete moron yakking on a cell phone and completely oblivious of their speed, that people are backing up behind them or what day of the week it is.

I have no idea what you do about such a person. They won't look in their rear-view mirror, they don't know where they are, they couldn't hear an exploding sun. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd like to hear it.
