In 1962, Ford produced the mustang proto-type. But the 1964 1/2 was the first official "stang.

A long story, made shorter. Back when I was a journalism major in college at California Polytechnic State University, I wrote a feature story about a Cal Poly engineering graduate who worked for Ford during the development of the Mustang. The Cal Poly mascot is the "Mustang". He said he recommended the name to Ford during development, and it stuck. The original prototype Mustang looks like this:



It's changed a bit since the 64 1/2 introduction...
