On the flip side, the parents aren't considering the feelings of the son.

Have I heard of it: yes. Mostly in other countries & nobility in earlier centuries.

Even though I happily took my husband's surname, this tradition is probably the last stronghold from a patriarchial society where women were subservient rather than equal in a marriage & the wife taking the husband's name was the only option. It makes sense to me & I consider it quite thoughtful if the DIL's family has no males to carry on their name as gray ghost stated.

You don't have to agree with or like their decisions, just love them.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

I wanted my spouse to take my maiden last name as my father made no males. He wouldn't do it. Wanted to put my maiden last name in as a middle name on at least one of my 4 sons... no go there either. ego.

We bring our children into the world, but we don't get to live their lives for them. Why let something so trivial (yes, trivial) cause hard feelings in the family? I raised my children to be individuals with a sense of self. As such, not all of their decisions are what I would like, but they are making their own way in the world...not MY way.

I have heard of it. Doesn't bother me. if I get married again I probably wont change my name. If I had a son I wouldn't mind if he took his brides name. Names dont bring happieness. Being outside the box can be fun agravating parents can be fun too! lol Prayers they have a long happy life together.

As Shakespeare said -- "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet..." Just love them and be happy that they are happy. Life is too short and precious to waste on anger. Don't let this cause a rift between you and your son and his bride.
