Hitting The Road

House will close mid July. MH is ready to hit the road. Questions

1.How do we establish residence in South Dakota?
2. Do we need to be there to get the MH and Toad Licensed?
3. Can we keep our Utah drivers license until they expire?

Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated

The first step is to get a mailing address in SD that is recognized by the state as a legal address for driver's license and registration. Do this ASAP as your closing date is only a month away. We used Dakota Post in Sioux Falls. There are many others, and they will have info on their websites on how to become a resident.

Dakota Post, as well as some of the others, will assist in registering your vehicles in SD. That is the second step.

No, you can't keep your Utah driver's license if you want to be a resident of SD so the third step is to go to SD and get new driver's licenses. That must be done in person because of the eye test and photo. Be sure to gather all the necessary documentation ahead of time. This is listed on the Dakota Post website. You will also need to fill out an affidavit stating you intend to make SD your permanent home.

Joe, you might want to check with Escapees. They offer help on all of that!

I will also recommend mydakotaadress in Madison, SD. Terri is the best. Her office is right across the street from the Courthouse and she has a great working relationship with them. You do have to go to SD to get your driver's license but she can take care of everything else for you. If you do not currently have an enhanced driver's license, make sure you have all the documentation required by DMV. It takes lots of documentation the first time. There is state park in Madison, SD that is convenient to stay in white taking care of your business.
