HMS Bounty Sinks off of North Carolina

Sad storm news from today.

2 crew members from the HMS Bounty are still missing and it's been reported that the HMS Bounty, a replica of the original HMS Bounty, commissioned by MGM in 1960 for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty, has sunk.

This ship has been used since then for various purposes including education and training sailors and spent a lot of its time in Mystic CT. The news reports are reporting that the ship left CT yesterday heading down to FL to get out of the way of the storm.

The Coast Guard has rescued all but two of the crew members. They are reported to be wearing special life jackets that will keep them afloat and warm in the cold seas, for at least 15 hours.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the missing crew members and the Coast Guard teams searching for them.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Amen

FYI, The Bounty had gone through an extensive overhaul at the Boothbay Maine Shipyard. She was a very majestic craft.

Yes it is quite a shame that such a majestic piece of work is now sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, like so many other vessels. The tall ships are few and far between and I wonder if a replica of this ship will be rebuilt.

We just hope that the 2 remaining crew members are rescued safely.

Unfortunately the HMS Bounty Website at TallShipBounty.org is reporting that one crew member did not make it and one is still missing. News organizations are reporting that the captain is still missing. Holding out hope that he will be found in safe condition.

What happened? Did they not leave early enough, head in the right direction, what?

It is a very unfortunate mishap.

The best report that I have heard is that they actually tried to outrun the storm.

The saddest part of this, in my opinion, is that the ship could have easily survived in the Mystic Harbor/Dock. We are less than 75 miles from Mystic at our current location and the winds are not that bad.

Prayers go out to the lost crew member and the still missing captain

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the crew, and all on the east coast with the storms going through.

I saw that on the news. It is indeed a shame. Hope they find the Captain, but what I saw on the local news said the other crew member was found but deceeesed.

The Captain was a direct descendant of the Fletcher Christian that lead the mutiny against Captain Blye according to one news article I saw.

Ken, Please note; perhaps the reporter misspoke.

Claudene Christian Dead: HMS Bounty Crew Member Found Unresponsive In Atlantic Ocean

Christian claimed a unique connection to the Bounty. On her Facebook profile, she wrote that she was a descendent of Fletcher Christian -- a crew member of the original HMS Bounty who helped seize control of the ship and led a mutiny in 1789.

The search is still on for the Bounty's Captain, Robin Walbridge, 63. He had decided to take the Bounty out to sea to avoid the hurricane and explained on the ship's facebook page: Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision...NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is...A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!
