I just read the round run post (Eveybody saying it was somebody else's problem,, Reminded me of The Credit Card Song.. (1970s I think it was Jerry Ford) I talked to Mr. Brown and Mr, Green and a couple hundred people in between and findally I talked to Mr. Black. ....

This type of activity costs the US consumer over a billion dollars a year yet they treat it as "petty"

Same for Hackers and internet scammers.

More than all the bank robberies, Home Infasions and so on put together, Yet we they treat it as petty,. We need to change that.

We got our card hacked while we were on vacation at Grand Canyon a few years back. After that trip I always take enough cash with us to get us home if it happens again.
You're right, no one cares. When I called Discover, their response was, "Well, you don't need to worry, you're not liable for any of it". That was nice, but they pooh-poohed the whole thing as something trivial.
I reported it to my local police in case something started popping up in our credit history. Their attitude was it was hopeless. But at least they took the report.
And I'm still waiting for my new Discover chip-enabled card.

I haven't figured out what good a chip is. Probably only 30% of retailers have the ability to read the chip, it takes longer to process, and it does nothing for on line orders. I asked my credit union what good the chip was and I was told "it makes it almost impossible to make a counterfeit card. All of the times my card was used fraudulently it was done by simply using the number on the front and back of card.

What gives?

Soon, maybe within a year or two, the chip and pin system used in Europe will be in operation in the US. Your card will not leave your hand when you make a purchase. You place your card in a small machine and enter the pin. Online there is a system where for each transaction you get a special pin that is only good for that one transaction. This would seem to defeat people using your credit card numbers to make a purchase. Of course this only makes fraud more difficult, but thieves will eventually find a way around it. The chip and pin has greatly reduced credit card fraud in Europe but some still exists.

We were at a Sam's club trying to get gas with our USAA card. . . . card denied. Called USAA. They said that a "suspicious" charge had been made for $26 and change in St. Louis. We were in Kentucky at the time and it was a legitimate purchase. . . . I asked them if they had ever heard of the internet? Used for making purchases on line from different cities . ??? Anyway, I asked them for other recent purchases that had been made to the card. The third purchase they rattled off was two airline tickets purchased in Malaysia the day prior for two flights out of the Philippines to the tune of about $3,200.00 . . . . Funny thing was, THOSE charges didn't trip their "suspicious charge" filters! Go Figure!

The U.S. Is going to a chip and sign system. The powers that be think that people are not capable of remembering a PIN number. Merchants will be charged big fees for. Credit transactions if they do not convert to this system.

Nothin is hack proof.
40 years with the same FCU. Hacked about 1X per year. FCU calls before the charge is approved and it gets denied. And NEVER a charge, loss, or credit issue.
Get the good stuff and never worry
