(HEY! NO FAIR! He posted while I was writing!)
Wow! and those were "following seas", coming from the stern, which is what kept turning them sideways. I'm sure that back guy was starting to sweat, because you don't have a lot of control, it just pushes you up on the other guy if he is slower. I watched a one hour special on TV once ... the Coast Guard used that area for extreme rescue training. The chopper has to stay above the CREST of the wave, so when they drop from the chopper, they had to time it to hit the top of the wave, otherwise they drop an extra 30-50 ft into the trough and the wave crashes on top of them. Also for testing any new brand of boat they are considering ... it has to survive those waves AND they turn it sideways so the waves actually make it do a full rollover, to make sure the boat will bring itself back upright as designed and not just stay upside down trapping the crew. (Yes, they are appropriately geared in case they have to swim out!) God bless those commercial fishermen who face that stuff to make a living, the families who wait for them at home ... and emergency responders everywhere! Kathryn ~~~

I wonder how long it will be before someone makes a "commerical fun ride" out of that?

The person who uploaded it says it was filmed at Grey River in New Zealand.

I think you're right
Neither of the boats has US markings on the hull. Just a 4 digit number.
If it had been filmed in the Columbia the breaking waves would have been blown into 'smoke' as soon as they crested by the normal thermal winds. Reminded me of my trips to 'Windsurfing Mecca', Hood River. I've used an 8'2" board and a 2.4 Meter sail there and found both to be too big. I live near San Francisco Bay and was no stranger to high winds and rough water 'back in the day'. Even so the Columbia was a very humbling experience. These days I head for shore when it gets over 30. Getting old sucks sometimes. |
