I smoked from 1967 until 2007. 2 or 3 packs a day for a lot of years. It took a couple of tries but did finally quit in 2007. Put on 25 lbs. immediately from eating instead of smoking. After 10 years the weight gain has reversed and I am back to my 2007 weight. Wife still smokes but it quit bothering me (addiction wise) in less than a year after I quit. I would like her to quit for health reasons but it is not my decision to make. It is likely the most addictive legal drug on the planet.

Started smoking while in High School in the early 1950's. Remember almost everyone smoked, both boys and girls at that time. Went into the Army in 1955 and it was unusual at time to see a non smoker, had a 10 minute smoke break every hour. Then a merchant seaman for several years were smokes were sold aboard for just a little over $1.00 a carton. I quit smoking in 1996, hated waking up hung over and coughing. Never looked back. Still enjoy a drink in moderation, no urge to smoke. Was to old to want to try the other kind of "smokes"

Yup! Kinda wonder how much insurance rates would drop if they didn't have to cover the devastating effects of tobacco!

I might be a bit slanted but I believe there are a lot of taxes put on a pack that was supposed to address the "devastating effects". But then again another intervention by the government that has sorely gone wrong.

I asked the Dr if I gave up smoking, drinking and chasing women if I would live longer. He said yes, but what's the point? J/K, I do smoke, about 1 pack a day for decades. When my wife got pregnant with our daughter, 34 years ago she quit. Cold turkey, no problem. Around that time we painted and cleaned the house. The nicotine stains were terrible and I haven't smoked inside since then but I do still smoke. I know I should quit but that's easier said than done. I think you just need to get to a point where you say do I really need this or want this. Hopefully I get there soon.

I would suggest a 3-part question:

a) I've never smoked
b) I was a smoker but have quit
c) I remain a smoker

Up here in Canuck-istan they tax the hell out of liquor, beer and tobacco. Both at the Federal and Provincial levels.

But guess what! Marijuana will be Federally legal as of July 2018 for "medicinal" and recreational use...Federal law says 18 years of age, but most Provinces are setting the age at 19. Appropriate taxes levied of course.

So tobacco users are demonised, to be burned at the stake, but marijuana users, well that's their "medicine".

Smoked for about 28 years. One trip to the acupuncture clinic cured that.

Bought myself a Dodge Charger for quitting. On the 2nd Charger now..

I started smoking, like many others, in high school. Met the woman that would eventually become my DW. She didn't smoke and didn't like anything about it. Agreed to marry me if I gave up smoking, put them down in 1998 and haven't had once since. Best decision I ever made...

64 years clean & sober, never drank or smoked. Thank GOD because I have to many other addictions.

OP’s question needs more options. Kinda like the question: Have you stopped beating your Wife ? Dammed if you do or dammed if you don’t.
