Say the Earth is 24,000 mi in circumference and totally smooth. You stretch a string around the Earth. Now you lift the string 1" off the entire surface. How much longer is the string?

Hint: if you remember 7th grade math, you should have this in 10 seconds.
Doesn't really matter how high you lift the string, it's still the same length.

That's what I was thinking until I factored in the stretch factor , then I decided to wait for a better response.

Somewhat surprisingly, the string only needs to just over 6 inches longer to be raised up 1 inch all around the earth. Most don't believe you!

I spent 15 minutes trying to find the 'play button' for Clifftall's original post to find the answer, then realized it wasn't a video clip.
And maybe it was backing up, but ground wire to backup beeper was corroded and not making a connection and therefore no one knew.

Exactly Gracie. C = PI R2 ..... Or C= pi D. PI = 3.14. So therefore the Diameter is only 2" longer, that means 2 x 3.14 which equals 6.28 inches longer. That certainly is mind boggling to anyone givin all that distance. What gets me is raising 1" around any circle gives the same results.

Trick question, there's no such place as "Hawii."

If you had asked about HawAii, the answer is:

"Any highway built under the auspices of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and funded by the federal governent is called an interstate highway, even if it doesn't cross state lines. In fact, there are many local routes that lie entirely within a single state funded by the Act.
Hawaii has three interstates - H1, H2, and H3 - which connect important military facilities on the island of Oahu."

This sounds like one of those pie R round, cake R square math problems. When I went to 7th grade it was 'rithmetic, not that new fangled "new math".

Kekker, I know what you mean but most forums are the same way. I do just the opposite. I post More... I think the typing makes my skin thicker.

I apologize if you thought I was being rude, I was just reacting to your question as presented, not being rude. Please post, we all contribute to make this a great site.
