If I was a preschooler and one of the 8% that got it wrong, what would it mean?

That you carpool to school and don't take the bus.

To be fair, I cheated, I'm in Australia right now and since it's the other side of the planet, everything is flipped. They drive on the left, steering wheel is on the right. Walking around I have to have my head on a swivel to watch for cars coming from the 'wrong' direction. Lots of RVs in the resort town I'm in, largest I've seen are Class C's. Trailers are 'caravans' and many made by Jayco. Many more diesel than 'petrol' powered vehicles. Of course the entry doors on buses and RVs are on the left side.

Actually the question is a good example of the issue with over reliance on testing in schools as a way to evaluate schools, teachers, and programs.

The illustration makes a child apply knowledge and observation of an experience with a bus. They then have to analyze what is missing (the door) and apply that information to a deduction it must be the left side. Problems arrise when the child hasn't had breakfast, watched Mommy and Daddy fight, has a tummy ache, or just doesn't care which way the bus is headed. Then the child, teacher, and school are considered deficient when a pre-schooler just wants a different colored crayon.

I spent the last 10 years of my teaching career trying to get kids to care enough to apply themselves to answer such questions and saw it going completely counter to everything I believed in and knew to be the best for life-long learners. Probably why I retired as soon as I could rather than continue in a system that I felt was going in the wrong direction. I'm pleased to see many others making the same realization.

If I may hijack, here's one for ya.

Say the Earth is 24,000 mi in circumference and totally smooth. You stretch a string around the Earth. Now you lift the string 1" off the entire surface. How much longer is the string?

Hint: if you remember 7th grade math, you should have this in 10 seconds.
