I thought it was just me!

I have been approached numerous times by people wanting money at gas stations, restaurants, or just at corners with signs. Panhandlers!

I work for my money and have been blessed in many ways and choose not to give to people approaching like this. It just seems fake to me and another way to cheat us. So, I just say no and keep facing them until they leave. Not turning my back on them.

I think there are just going to be more and more of them in the future. They find a way to get something without working for it and they will keep doing it. If people stop giving them money or gas it might stop. It creeps you out though.

The strangest encounter we've had was at a dark foggy campground in Wyoming just off the interstate. We pulled in late to a deserted CG except for 2 occupied sites so we went to the opposite end as to not bother them. Within a few minutes some guy walked up on me in the fog as I was grilling, scaring the crap out of me, and asked if we had cell phones. I shrugged him off as it was none of his business and he gave me a speech about why he was camping there because it was far from cell towers and he could 'feel' them. He asked if we would mind turning them off for the night. We didn't of course, but the next day Google showed us these people are real. That doesn't mean I believe them but there are some out there who claim to be able to feel cell phone waves and are physically affected by them. Supposedly they cause them all sorts of problems. Anyway, the guy really creeped us out. Had I not been so tired from the drive I probably would not have slept. I don't carry weapons on long interstate trips so people like that in a deserted CG far from civilization can certainly be disturbing.
Was that guy married to my sister? She feels like that. She puts her cell phone on speaker and holds it about 6 inches from her head. So the last time I was next to her I told her "studies show the phone needs to be 7 1/2 inches away and gave her a measuring tape! I have been known to wear a aluminum foil hat around her just to yank her chain a little After all, what are brothers for?

Well being the DOM that I am, the young lady's comments starts the mind to wandering.

However, I have one of those IR thermometers and was checking my tires at a rest stop parked close to a LEO. Started having images of myself face down on the pavement in handcuffs answering questions about what that thing was! Nothing happened, but in today's world you never know.

My wife saw a young couple panhandling near our home one day with a dog in tow. She, being the most kind hearted person I know, went to the local fast food and bought six cheeseburgers and took them to the couple. Said she though the three of them could use a bite to eat. Made their day and hers as well.

Really enjoying this thread! In 6 years I've been approached only twice for cash. Once at a gas station and once at a rest stop. Both requests were for gas to get from point A to point B. One was a family of 4. He had them all lined up and pathetic looking. Sad, really. Whether a scam or legit hard luck. But before the conversation got to me saying no, the station manager came out and ran them off. The lone guy at the rest stop was young and rough looking and was bold enough to knock on my door. I declined him while never opening the door.

I have been approached on numerous occasions requesting cash, for food, gas, pharmacy drug for dying wife. I have decided to never give out cash. I have offered to but a burger at McDonalds, to the guy needing drugs for dying wife standing outside a Walgreens 'bring the prescription, I'll pay for the meds', somehow I always get declined.
Cash or nothing, so it's nothing.

One of our twins goes to school in Terre Haute, Indiana. This has us traveling I-70 through Ohio and Indiana quite often. For some reason the rest areas near Indy, both eastbound and westbound, seem to be havens for the panhandlers. We have been approached by them every time we stop at those rest areas. Makes us more than a little bit apprehensive about our daughter driving back and forth by herself.

My MOM was a strong hell/fire and brimstone Southern Baptist
When Jehovah Witness would come knocking MOM would invite them right on in ----like the spider and the fly

Jehovah Witness put the word out..........bypass our house. Too many were being converted
