The people in The South are great--from Texas to Virginia. Sorry, Florida, but your people are not necessarily southerners even though they live in the South.
I guess taxation is relative--vs. what you've paid in the past. In Alabama, we have 2% sales taxes on vehicles/RV's and property taxes are 1/4th that of all surrounding states. If a homeowner is on disability, there's no property taxes.
I was in Florida recently, and my daughter's property taxes were $3K on a $185K house--and another $2K in HOA dues. I have friends with property taxes in Florida well over $10K--no thanks.
We moved to NW Alabama for the incredible Tennessee River--top inland cruising in the U.S. With a 6 mile sunset lake view out the front door, it's like living on the ocean. And there's 650 miles of navigable water from Paducah to Knoxville.
And with such low property taxes, we can afford great houses, RV's and boats.
My favorite retirement places: NW AL, Guntersville, AL, Crossville, TN, Mt. Home, AR, North Georgia Mountains, Banner-Elk, NC, Asheville, NC, TN East of Knoxville, Savannah and Charleston, SC, Highlands, NC
