I'm always suspicious about a company that have signs in their service area that says something like, “Customer are not allowed in the service are because of insurance reasons”, or “Customers in the service area are prohibited by the insurance company.” I don't believe it for a second. I recently went to Speedco to have my oil changed and they have no problem with customers being in their sevice area, in fact they want you to witness them tightening the oil plug to the recommended torque. Why does their insurance company allow it? Makes me think they're trying to hide shoddy workmanship, or the rough treatment of your equipment, or maybe not doing what they said they would do.

I don't know if this counts, but here is what happeed to me.

The tether that holds my gas cap on when it is unscrewed broke. I used a platice zip tie to attach it to the gas door. Evidently the tie was too long and got caught in the cap when i screwed it on. A few days later the check engine light came on. I called the local Nissan dealer service guy and he told me to bring it in. I took it in ( on an appoitment) and waited. Six hours later they told me the problem was the zip tie being caught in the cap. Even though my truck was under warranty, they charged $80 dollars for a diaginostic smoke test and wanted to replace the gas cap for an additional $ 40. I tried to negotiate the bill with the service manager to no avail. I paid the $80 and took my truck home. I shortend the zip tie and made sure it wouldn't get caught in the cap. A couple of days later the engine check light went out and no problems since. It seems to me the service guy could have told me to not let the zip tie get caught before they did all the diagnostic.

Wow! I don't believe they did any tests, they didn't even bother to reset the check engine light.
