Ford does not own Cummins or Cummins "patents". If they were Cummins patents they would belong to Cummins. Cummins may well license patents from Ford, cross-licensing is common in industry, and there would be nothing unusual in that. Ford did own some Cummins stock in the past, but Cummins is an independent company with plants all over the world. This is a rumor that has circulated for years, partly because of an old internet hoax. Ford does use a Cummins in one of their heavy duty trucks, I believe, but their main source of heavy duty diesels is International.
Copied from Does Ford own Cummins patents

Ford did own 10% of Cummins stock at one time a long time ago, but Cummins has since bought back the stock.

When working for Dodge, the story we got was; Ford in an attempt to get Cummins engines for use in P/Us, purchased 10% of Cummins stock. When they acquired that 10% they were allowed access to the contract information Dodge had for the use of the ISB in trucks under 5 tons. On finding out how air tight that contract was, they sold the stock and went after a different diesel engine supplier.
Not necessarily 100% true , but an interesting story , none the less.

Where does this Ford Cummins relationship come from? Anyone have a source? I just checked the Securities and Exchange Commission annual 10-K filings for both. Cummins is not mentioned once in Ford's. Ford is only mentioned as one of many companies Cummins has supply agreements with in Cummins 10-K.

When Cat exited the OTR market, they formed a partnership with Navistar to provide them with completed 15 liter engines for their truck business. Navistar was using the Cat C15 block and building an engine from that including a EPA compliant fuel system. The EPA part never happened and Navistar almost went bankrupt in the process. I lost track of what happened at the point but my guess is that Cat is utilizing their C15 block design and some one is building an EPA compliant engine around it.

The idea that Ford somehow is the owner of and controls Cummins without any fingerprints in SEC docs is just not reasonable. "Publicly traded" means just that. Cummins is controlled by a CEO answering to a Board of Directors who in turn are elected by and answer to the stock holders. Any entity who owns more that a few % of the outstanding stock is disclosed.

That is what I have read also. The engines are Navistar not Caterpillar.

In 1990 Ford purchased 10.8% of Cummins stock and was not a 'major' partner. In 1997 Cummins bought the shares back. Ford has not owned any part of Cummins since. Read THIS PAGE I wish this internet rumor will eventually die.......
