Is your state like this?
Property Taxes in South Carolina is a joke
If you live in a home that is valued at $175,000
You pay $1383.00 in taxes per year
If this is your second home you pay $5531.00 per year
If you make it a office or commercial it is $9241.00 per year
A motorhome counts as a second home so a RV valued at $175,000 you will pay
$5531.00 in taxes This is one reason that I have not got my diesel yet.
How can they charge you more for a rental home or a second home?

It's surely not like that in Michigan. WOW, that's one way for sure to generate some $$$$ for your state though.

PA does not consider an RV to be a "house", it is a vehicle that you pay DMV registration fees on. No property tax.

Each state has their own way of generating revenue. For some, like NY it is property taxes and income taxes. Some use personal property taxes and licensing fees and others rely on sales taxes. People demand services and someone has to pay for those services. That's not pretty but it is a fact of life.
The fairest form of taxation is the one that many on here complain about because it's one that hits them. That fair tax is the toll road. You use it so you pay for it. You don't want to pay for it so don't use it.

Same for Wisconsin.
DMV registration is only $106.50 a year for my coach.
(The property tax on a house valued at $150,000 is over $3000.00 a year).

My taxes were much higher in MI 30 years ago on a $50K home and I lived in the county. My home in Oconee County is assessed at $179K , taxes around $750 and will drop next year with homestead exception. My MoHo was taxed as a vehicle I thought and taxes dropped with depreciation. I know Medicare Insurance Plans in our area are much lower than downstate SC. as is vehicle insurances. I've got no complaints...cost of living compared to MI much lower....just look at gas prices. You just have to look at all your monthly expenditures to see your bottom line. Georgia treats our RV lot and 5th wheel as second home....taxes are more than fair.

While your property taxes high for second homes, things tend to even out with other taxes. Your state is not out of line, see this chart:

BFlinn181 - the graph you show only says what percentage of taxation/fees goes into total revenue for the state. It doesn't show how much revenue is actually generated.
Just sayin'

I always refer to the Kiplinger tax comparison for retires which shows the 10 best friendly states to live in and the 10 worst states to live in. SC is listed as one of the 10 best to live in; so it must be pretty low in overall taxes. See link below.
State-by-State Guide to Taxes on Retirees-Kiplinger
