It's Time to Head South
Well, I am not a year round RV'er and therefore it is time to pack remove all items that will not winter well (liquid stuff and flat screen TV); winterize and store. In the past we have paid for winter indoor storage, but this year we are going to use a brand new cover that came with the motor home when we bought it. The motor home is 34' in length. I am praying for a calm overcast day with no wind so my husband (who has breathing issues) will have an easier time of pulling the very heavy cover up to the roof, unroll it and figure out the best way to begin and end on the roof. It all makes me very nervous, but we are on our own and I am sure we can get it done; I just dread it. Shortly after this chore is done, we will head South for the winter. It will be interesting to see how the cover holds up through the winter but I am not going to worry about it while we are gone; too many card games to play and sights to see.

Safe travels.

OK, I'm going to ask the obvious question here. Why are you storing the RV and "going south"? Why don't you drive the RV south and not worry about winterizing it???

I don't know what , Shamrock56's , situation is ; but I do have several friends that maintain an RV in Canada, and another in the US south, because they don't feel comfortable with the long drive south in questionable weather. Personal choice, that I may be making myself in a few years.

I can see removing the TV if security is an issue, but otherwise I agree - The cold won't hurt it, or at least it didn't hurt the two in our last coach, which was always stored over the Wisconsin winters, or the three in this coach, which was stored over it's first winter, again in Wisconsin. (We now live in it and are slowly making our way to central Florida for the winter. No more ice, snow or salt!)

i don't know if your RV is new or not but a lot of RV company's will void the finish warranty if you use a cover. Wind can move the cover and wear the finish off.

Heading South Very Soon! Excited
Well, I guess I should check my posts more often. I never expected this much conversation; I really feel like a contributing member of the site now. Thanks everyone! To answer your questions...our RV is 20 years old, we have had it for 3 years but have not driven it more than a couple of hours from home. It is in really excellent shape for a 20 year old rig, but we have had considerable issues with brakes and been ripped off by one service facility, big time. This summer we finally found a very knowledgeable service facility that we trust and feel much more confident about the brakes. Also, we already have a home in FL in a over 55 community. We did consider driving the RV down to store as we have free storage, but considering the fuel costs to drive there and back we decided against it as it would be a wash. With all that being said, there is no warranty to worry about in regards to the cover. Thanks for the TV information; removal is just an overly cautious husband, but that's okay. I think we will be able to recruit our neighbor to help get the cover up to the roof and that will be a huge help. Oh and no need to apologize for hijacking, I really don't mind. I enjoyed all of the banter.
