I'm betting on Brad. I do think it is fasinating how well the computer is actually doing. To receive the text message containing the question, parse it, understand it, search millions of bits of information, develop a list of possible answers and then to pick one is a a great test.

It is understandable that Watson gave the same wrong answer as I suspect the computer is not notified of the wrong answer. What would happen if Watson could hear the answers given by the other two players and respond?

Hi wildtoad,
Watson does receive the other contestants answers. He just did not receive it in a time frame that allowed him to alter his answer.

Gary,

Thanks for the info. It would be nice to know what he (it) would have done with the new data.

If anyone wants to see what went into the making of Watson, go to NOVA | Smartest Machine on Earth and watch the NOVA program on this subject. It was a 1 hour NOVA show on PBS.

If the computer doesn't win this time it will the next. The important thing to remember is its kind of like the talking dog. Its not how well the dog speaks, its that it does at all.

The thought on this is that the IBM computer is closer to a Star Trek "Enterprise" computer rather than the HAL computer.

Well back to the drawing board

Apparently Watson doesn't know that Toronto isn't a U.S. city.

There are a lot of Americans that don't know that either. But even with a few flubs, Watson is still kicking butt.

Wilson is winning because it is faster on the buzzer than the two guys. I watched them closely last nite and they have a slower ''reaction time'' than the machine. It is that simple. I believe that between the two of them, they know most of the answers but their ''reaction time'' is just slower than the machine.

Try this test and you will see what I mean.

Prop your arm and wrist on a dinner table on a level plane.
Use your thumb and first finger only and have a friend hold a crisp dollar bill between your fingers.
Set your thumb and first finger one inch apart on Georges nose.......
WATCH CLOSELY FOR THE DOLLAR TO DROP......
Have your friend ''drop the dollar'' at random times and you try to catch the dollar bill before it goes between your thumb and first finger WITHOUT MOVING YOUR HAND DOWN.
THIS IS ''REACTION TIME'' The time it takes for your ''eyes'' to see the dollar move, tell you brain it is moving, and your brain telling your fingers to react to catch the dollar.........
If you catch one in ten dollars, you are above average ......
TRY IT.....

To ''level the field'' here is what I propose...
HAVE THEM EACH WRITE DOWN THE ANSWERS INSTEAD OF ''BUZZING IN''...... The guys would kick butt, I guarantee it.......

God bless our troops.

Seajay is correct, it is an uneven playing field. You can see the look of disgust and hopelessness on Ken and Brad's face.

Now here's a point to ponder; There have been many trial games leading up to the current one. The people who make up the questions know Watsons weak spots.
I'm not saying the fix is in, but if you are on a plane to Chicago, the landing will be in Toronto according to watson.

The score is 35 to 5, late in the fourth quarter. maybe Ken and Brad ought to take a hammer to the avator, get disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. Have a rematch in 6 months. Try to figure out how to level the field.

Dag nabit, these grapes are sour !!

Seajay and two-niner,
I think you may be missing the point.

1. Watson does not "ring in" until it has finished its' analysis and has crossed the preset threshold of having a correct answer. Who wins or looses, with Watson, has nothing to do with "reaction" time.

2. Watson must complete the same process as the two human contestants, before he "rings in".
understand the answer
understand the answer as incorporated in the topic
search its data bases for possibilities
sort the possibilities based on the answer and topic
determine if the best answer passes the threshold of being correct
ring in
pose a question that is acceptable

For past Jeopardy champions this takes about 3 seconds (on average) from when the answer is presented to the contestants. This means past champions have completed the above mentioned process as the answer is being read. Watson needs to be as fast as the human players, not the other way around. The human champions set the bar, not Watson.

3. If you are willing to learn about Watson (see post 18) and why IBM would spend the time and money to create Watson, you'll see the real reason behind Watson.

4. Having a computer think and understand the nuances of our language is remarkable. Taking correct action on that understanding is amazing.

I wonder if those fixed on "reaction time" are understanding that history is being made as they watch. This is a huge event that will affect all of us. The technology demonstrated on Jeopardy will be useful in every part of our lives.

GaryKD: We all understand history is being made in a very public way. We got all that. Hurray for Watson. IBM is a business, as such, how could it get more publicity and return on their money than whacking Ken and Brad ??

I continue to root for our boys even though the end is predetermined. And I stand by my insinuation the people who make up the questions are controlling the game.

Ten years from now we'll look back and say "Watson? that old obsolete thing".
Do you remember these words "Watson, come here" ?

Kerry
