The 5, the 10, etc seems to be a SoCal thing. Up north I mostly hear I 5, US101, Hwy 99, etc. So,

So? I have been trying to avoid millennials since they have communications issues--putting down those damned phones interrupting their texting.

My husband's Grandmother used to say 'well'... Our generation started the 'um'... and the next appears to be using 'So', I believe because we made such a fuss over the silly sounding um... We'd tell the kids to get their thoughts together before they opened their mouths... but , I have ADD and my thoughts are always jumbled, and never together... so , where does that leave it?

Then there's "know what I mean", used three or so times in one sentence!

What about the phrases "Having said that" or "That being said"?
Using them does it make you sound more educated or more authoritative?
Then there is the "towing behind my" whatever, motorhome, truck etc?
How else do you tow other than behind? Do you tow your "whatever" in front of?

So, I hear it all the time, too. I listen to talk radio a lot. The guests are often lawyers, Insurance agents, realtors, educators, government officials, etc. who are well - educated, but their age seems to be the common denominator.
So, I've also read that some words are used in conversation as "placeholders". Meaning "I need just a second to think", or maybe "I'm thinking for a second, but I'm not finished speaking".
So, it drives me nuts too.

I find myself turning off interviewers on the TV/radio because of all the "So...." and "I mean..." statements.

OK, so many years ago I studied Russian. In the Russian language the translation of so is tak. We had one instructor who would after making a point follow it "tak tak tak" pause, "tak tak". Boy did that get old after a while.

I think it's just a cultural change thing. Did our parents wonder about us using "groovy", or more recently "Dude"
Why do kids today always say "excuse me", when they really want you to get out of the way.
