When I landed at Rhein-Main AFB in Germany (Nov 1972) I asked an MP where the latrine was, he pointed out a room. I got real irate with him for sending me into a room with nothing but walls until he pointed out the gutters on the floors and water running down the walls.

likewise in IRan when I worked there way back when ...

you'd see the concrete ditches along the streets...

in one place you'd see water running from the houses,
right down the hill, you'd see someone doing #1 in it,
a little further down the hill someone was washing clothes,
and further still someone was washing fruit in it !!!!

I didn't eat fruit for 2 years

but it was the best vacation of my young life - Systems Programmer and computers didn't get installed for 16 months !!! so we travelled around in our landrovers and on our yz400 dirt bikes !
