There are several New Mexico State parks near Los Cruces, The prices are good but the area in general is flat desert. Not bad this time of the year. The summer will kill you.

Greetings from snowy cold Colorado Springs...
Thanks for the info, yes, we were planning to hit some of the state parks. Thinking also of continuing farther south to San Antonio and on down to Padre Island.

Its Las Cruces.
I 2nd the NM state parks as a good camping option. Do your homework on each specific park, as they vary in facilities, space sizes and hookups available.
For commercial RV parks there are two in LC I recommend: Hacienda RV Resort Hacienda RV Resort is an upper scale park, in quality & price. Its located on the south edge of town, just off I10 within walking distance of the Old Mesilla district of shops and restaurants;
or Sunny Acres RV Park Sunny Acres RV Park, which is located right in the middle of town, a bit more reasonable price, but over half filled with long term residents.
Yes there is lots of desert around LC, thats true for most of the SW USA. LC also has the Rio Grande river running right through town, the 8500 ft Organ mountains just to the east, the very unique Mesilla district, the White Sands National Monument and a National Wildlife Refuge to the NE of town.

If you continue on to San Antonio, along the way one of my favorite stops to explore the hill country is Buckhorn Lake Resort Buckhorn Lake Resort, right off I10 near Kerrville, Tx

While I do not prefer to stay at KOA parks, the one at Las Cruces sits atop a high hill West of town. If you get a site next to the East edge of the park the view of Las Cruces at night is something you never forget.

Sunny Acres was OK for us for a few nights. We make an enthusiastic recommendation to eat at St. Claire Winery and Bistro if you can make it. 1800 Avenida de Mesilla just south of I-10.

The sunsets on the mountains to the east are spectacular.

I'll second the vote for Hacienda in Las Cruces. We stayed there a couple of nights this week. It's pricey at about $48 but the facilities (including the best dog run I've seen yet) are top notch.

We're on a similar path to San Antonio but have gone through a northern loop to Ruidoso, NM and Roswell on our way to Buckhorn Lake Resort. I wouldn't recommend that northern loop.

Great Mexican food in Masilla at La Posta. Cute little historic town.

Have Fun

what didn't you like about the "northern loop" I only ask as we are going to Ruidoso this weekend, southbound on I25 and then up to Ruidoso, returning home the same way

Hi Crankarm; I should have been more specific about the "northern loop". Actually it was very pretty but just way too cold for us this time of year. I'm sure it's beautiful many times of the year but we didn't find November to be that time. This may well just be a personal taste thing and I certainly don't mean to bash the area at all. I'm very familiar with the Lake Tahoe area and it actually reminded me a good bit of Tahoe.

I'll triple the vote for Hacienda RV Park. We stayed there last fall and it is an up-scale park.

Happy trails.
