SS was not "established because the government thinks we are not competent enough to manage our own retirement". It was signed into law by F.D.R. in 1935 in the aftermath of the great depression. Most Americans had lost everything thanks to the fat cats on Wall Street. It was established as a safe and protected way to insure that Americans could retire with dignity. Entitlement programs certainly need reform but they are a necessary part of America's social contract with
all Americans - no matter what race, religion, or social status. We need to learn to coexist.
