The Michigan gas tax will rise to 25 cents in April from its current 19 cents , 31 cents in 2016, 36 cents in 2017 and 41 cents in 2018 based on current prices.

Didn't we just do this a while back to repair the roads that didn't get repaired?

Thanks I needed that, I may have to rethink my tank top off when getting home in the future.

It takes me about 800 miles travel round trip from here to real civilization.

California just passed a bill to tax you for every mile driven. Pilot program supposed to start in 2018.

It really makes sense to charge by something other than gallons purchased. An electric car needs to pay for the road maintenance just as much as a gasoline based or diesel based vehicle. I'm not sure miles driven is the best alternative but a pilot program appears to be a good approach.

Consideration might need to be made for out of state vehicles, so I suspect a combination of miles driven and a fuel tax is forth coming.

Pennsylvania raised gas taxes by 10 cents on January 1, 2014. That moved the rate to ~59 cents per gallon. Fifth highest in the country. On January 1, 2015 it goes up another 10 cents and on January 1, 2017 it goes up by another 8 cents. Additionally vehicle registrations went up by 50%. You should feel good about 25cents!

The trouble with gas taxes is that overall they are very regressive... that is, they hurt the poorest folks most, as they can't afford the newest cars that get the best mileage, and often have to drive farther to work. (yes, I know, big RV's are an exception, but as an overall rule, it's true).

IMHO, the way to steer people into more efficiency over time is to assess a permanent, ongoing registration fee for cars based on their mileage rating. Then you move that bar upwards (so perhaps in 2015 the bar for cars that pay nothing is 30mpg, but by 2020 it becomes 40mpg).

That way, unlike gas guzzler taxes that get absorbed into the purchase price and then don't hurt the resale value, this makes people think "hey, if I buy something with a fee, 5 years from now when I sell it, it will be worth less."

But since that idea makes sense, you can be sure it'll never happen :(

Next they will be increasing your already ridiculous Michigan State Income Tax.

Someone's got to put more money into Detroit to fight urban squalor. How many thousands and thousands of abandoned structures are needing torn down.

Gas tax is the easiest path of least resistance.

I guess you could always just move to Toledo. Or to the retirement communities in the South that are just full of GM and Ford retirees.

The state has some of the least restrictive load limits on trucks in the country if my memory serves me. It's a well known fact the trucks are tearing up the roads, big time, especially as compared to cars. So,

1. Why are they not bringing load limits into line with other states?
and
2.Why are they not taxing the trucks in proportion to the wear they are causing?

Just found out today that WA is considering a $1.17 per GALLON tax on gasoline, maybe diesel too. At that price I can quit working and come out ahead since no commute to a minimum age job!

Please read my second link regarding "fixing our roads". Mdot has it covered on their web site about big rig weight limits. If you believe their explanation. I'm a sceptic.
