. 4 Speeds here, hit top gear at 40 mph.

What scares me more is the idea of GPS mileage tracker based taxes. It would be very easy for it to be programmed to charge you MORE taxes for exceeding the speed limit on your fuel.....

At that point in time I would give up my US citizenship and go to Costa Rica. Better the devil you know....

Remember the last time the Feds decided we need to drive 55 mph. It works great east of the Mississippi, but out west, the distances are just to great to leave yourself sane for a road trip.

We need to let the Feds and our represenatives in congress (especially those from the eastern half of the USA) make a trip from say, Houston to El Paso and then on to California at a wonderful 55 mph. Then to make sure they got the point have them reverse the trip.

Can't say I've done Huston to El Paso, namely because its dead scrub country and not on my list of places to go, yet.

I have however, driven from Salem, OR to the eastern border of Tennessee running a 1-ton Extended Chevy Express Van pulling a Thor Toyhauler at 50-55mph. Now, if we hadn't been stopping for rest and relaxation along the way, the drive wouldn't have taken longer than four days.

Unfortunately Joseph you have no concept of newer automatic transmissions that come as 5 and 6 speeds and do not shift in until 55+. I too have one of those and get my best gas mileage in 5th gear at 59 to 61 mph.

Well, I'm familiar with the Allison 5 speed, the above mentioned 1-ton Chevy Express had one, along with 3.73 rear gears, but it still was crusing along in locked up top gear at 55mph. However, I think the big difference here is the engine type. Everything I've operated runs a gas engine. The afore mentioned 1-ton was running a Vortec 6.0L V8 gas.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I am pretty sure I get 6th gear running at 55 or less, (if I have the switch in the appropriate position).

Since there is so much electronics involved in the newer engines and drive trains, I'd think it would be possible to do some sort of reprogramming to change shifting parameters.

Stop and think about this for a minute...If the govt installed a national speed limit of 55 again who would benefit...The fuel that we save by slowing down will be shipped overseas to a country that has a shortage, therefore keeping our supply equal to or less than our demand....At 55 mph speed limit you will be donating to the state's funds cause of LEOs writing more speeding tickets.... I for one hope that the govt forgets about a National speed limit and puts their efforts else where to solve our problem.

Always remember that you as an individual can choose to slow down and run lower than the 65-75 speed limit, just please stay in the far right lane.

I think you have to look at it on a world market supply and demand. Right now the supply is about 85 million bbls/day and the demand is about 86 million bbls a day (quoting T. Boone Pickens, of course).If you an change either one by a couple of million bbls a day the price will drop. Speculators hate shortages and the price goes up. This is a world market and pricing does not go only by what happens in the US anymore. On my recent 9200 mile trip, I did notice that most of the truckers were a lots slower seemed to be 3 or so miles ahead of my 60 mph. We are rarely in a hurry and most of the time don't have a clue where we will stop, so we are affected a lots less than most.
