I'm trying to be optimistic, but keep getting knocked down. Our retirement nest egg is evaporating and just had an experience that has DW still crying.

Was out east visiting wife's family after the holidays. On the way back stopped at a rest stop on I-70 near Effingham, IL to stretch and walk our puppy. As I walked the pup I was approached by two women who asked if that was my MH. When I said yes it was, they began to give me a tongue lashing about wasting fuel and contaminating the environment. They then informed me that under the new order of things we "rich old farts" wouldn't be allowed such extravagance. I was at a loss for words, but not my wife. She got into a verbal skirmish with them until I regained my composure and drug her and the pup back to the MH.

Wife doesn't want to go back out now. She's afraid we will run in to some of the same types.

Teach-I too have run into these "holier than thou" types but I refuse to let them get under my skin. I usually fire back by some statement about me not needing their hugs, but maybe that does while pointing at the nearest tree. I then walk away laughing AT them.

When approached as described, a good reply; You Huggers are not mad because I pollute the environment, waste natural resources or squander wealth, you're angry because you can't afford to pollute, wasee or squander. The poor and illiterate of our society are always against excess, at least until they can afford it.

Hi Teach, long time. I wish you could be there when I have my first confrontation with these types. You will love that show. Don't let those losers stand in the way of what you guys worked your life for, you deserve your dream fulfillment. I will back those creeps up with just a few short words and some very strong body language. Peace

Teach, tell them you agree we should all be trying to save energy and that you'll be glad to sign their petition to get Mr "Inconvenient Truth" to quit flying around the world in his polluting private jet and maintaining all those wasteful high energy using homes.

Teach, I have at least one of these lovely individuals in one of my classes each semester. By the end of the semester, I have not changed their minds but have taught the other students how to think for themselves by asking enough questions to dismiss any unfounded opinions. All of my students know they must support any statement they make with facts or I will eat them alive...and I expect the same of them to me.

Betty and I plan to survive and proper for a long time just so we can infuriate the few “huggers” who may cross our paths.

tmar10:

You've kinda touched on something that is at the heart of one of those "worries" I mentioned.

Too often when encountering such folks, their "opinions" have little to do with facts. It's more often than not an opinion founded primarily on EMOTION. What is frightening is that the "holier than thou" demeanor (as described by DFR above) is growing...AND... it is eerily similar to the social & political beginnings of the Nazi initiative in the 1930's, and most certainly a fundamental underpinning of the socialistic approach to governing used in the "United Soviet SOCIALIST Republic."

OH geeeeze!!!......now I've got ANOTHER thing to worry about. I know this thread is about "optimism", but now I've got to fuss and fester about whether OPTIMISM alone is enough to defend against those who want to tell the country that I need to stop RV'ing!! Steve

It seems to me this new generation needs to learn the meaning of "Live and let Live".

Steve, I think you hit the nail on the head. There are far too many folks out there (Congress included) who think they know best how we should live our lives.

B-T-W, I would like to be there to see your first confrontation with these types.

Chikadee,
During my first class this morning, I had a young lady demanding some form of punitive punishment for any company who shipped jobs outside of the US. She was clueless to the economic impact her proposal would have on soon-to-be EX American corporations and US GDP. If our domestic firms are excessively punished or over-regulated, they will seek safe harbor somewhere else just as she would if I fined and humiliated her every time she entered the room. Where does this warped logic come from...the public school system, home, friends, internet, and/or society? I do not know.

I will always remain optimistic about the future and continue to teach the value of a free-market system to all who sit in my class.

tmar10 & ALL:

I too don't know the source of the "warped logic", but could rant on and on about it's pervasive presence in our every day lives. Maybe I'm just getting to be that quintessential "cranky old man" but I sure get ANGRY every time that damn T.V. ad comes on where folks smugly admit that....we owed the IRS over $100,000. in back taxes, but (xyz company) "fought" for us and saved us over $90,000......etc. etc. Or the leach lawyers ads which troll for folks who worked with asbestos, so these attorneys can file law suits etc. etc.

With apologies to Bailey, this stuff is...dog crap!! While I have "opinions" about where this trend emanates from, that discussion is not something for a thread about optimism. I apologize to Bob N Deb, the original posters, but it is darned HARD to remain optimistic......but, dang it....I'll keep tryin!!!! Steve

It sure is hard to remain optimistic - about anything. We took a 22 day, 4,400 mile trip last summer at the height of the fuel prices. Fortunately, we never paid over $4.599 a gallon, with some of it being closer to $4.10. The year before, we had 44 days of camping. Though we only managed 36 days last year, it was a decision on our parts to stay home and try to move our remodeling project ahead during the holiday period. We normally camp during the Thanksgiving week and over the New Years weekend. Doing so again would have brought us pretty close to the 44 day mark again. If all goes well, we'll be pushing that limit again this year.

Early last year, my entire department's jobs were shipped to India and I was force transferred into a new position. Two months ago, half of the new department was laid off. We finished last year with record profits - the highest quarter the company has ever had. If the economy hadn't tanked, I'd be retired by now and suffering like everyone else who depends on the their nest egg. The rumors of new taxes on retirement income just scare me to death. I hate to keep working and keep hoping this job will last long enough for the economy to turn around some - until the next time.

Steve,

Bailey took no offense...in her opinion eveything ends up as dog crap forcing additional leash time.

Are times tough? Yes. But I still see the glass as half full.

Chickadee, I thought I was the only one that got upset with that ad concerning back taxes! If I ever have tax problems I just going to tell the IRS that I use Turbo Tax.
