I think you had an extra few zeroís in there. The 7,000,000 referred to on the media adds in everybody remotely related to the car business like repairs, gas stations, people washing rental cars and all sorts of things that wouldnít be hurt by a reorganization. The big three have about 270,000 active workers and about 500,000 retired workers on their gold plated healthcare plan. I donít think they will fold up and disappear, but will go bankrupt and go under reorganization. When the airlines (individually ) went under organization, very few flights were actually missed. People will still need cars. I believe that a judge will break the labor and retiree logjam that has been killing the big three for decades. There are a lot of people working at suppliers and parts manuatoring that rely on the big three and would be hurt only if they stopped making cars. I think cars will still be made in America, just by different named companies with different management and possibly wit lots of the same employees working for reasonable wages similar to the transplants, In a reorganization like the airlines, a bankruptcy judge would throw out all contacts and everybody would start new. I pay $1946/month for my wifeís and my health plan .(both cancer survivors). If I was covered under a UAW plan even thought I might have retired 13 years ago at 51 years of age and not eligible for Medicare yet, my total monthly premium would be $21 for a much better plan with very small deductibles and co pays. Several years ago I spent 8 days in the hospital for pneumonia and the bill was over $31,000. Unbelievable. I had 5 room mates during that time (They kept dying on me.) and all of them were on some type of ďprogramĒ where they didnít pay. This is the problem, if you have insurance or can pay, they charge you much more to make you for the deadbeats.

Tom, I didnít see Sears. I know they made one cause I have ridden in many a parade in a 1908 Sears with an old gent from Sibley Iowa. His Dad bought it for him when he was 8 years old and at the present the car is in a museum in Sibley. But maybe Sears put their name on one of those on you're list. Book2

Interesting graph showing that the Jobs Bank program where auto workers can not work for 95% pay has cost the big 3 $4.2 BILLION in the since 2005. Graciously the Union yesterday said they would "suspend" the program until the industry rebounded. This is exactly the attitude that has run this industry into the ground. How the industry agreed to this is beyond me.

The big 3 have been major contributors to our economies for many decades.

The auto workers are not government employees and the bailout is a loan so I think we should cut them some slack on their wages. We all depend on each other in tough times.

Sorry to disagree, but a loan is to be paid back an these are bailouts not to be paid back no matter what they say. Anybody can see that. I see no reason why as a taxpayer, I need to be paying for somebody who retired in their early 50ís with a gold plated healthcare and an unfunded retirement. The labor contract have run the big three into the ground and it isnít up to people struggling and working an extra 15 years to pay for these extravagant benefits. The American people will not put up with this and the notion that it is up to us to help out these folks who have run the country into the ground. If management and the union want to save the company they will have to start cutting back to the levels of the transplants which is about a 35% cut in wages, benefits, and retirements. I see not evidence of this being done ant the petty cuts being offered by the UAW are a joke. These there companies are unfortunately going down and a judge will be making the tough decisions rather than management. We are having a hard time ourselves and can not take on all these prima donnas on both sides.

Dont be sorry. We cant all have the same opinions but we do differ somewhat on this subject.

I do agree its a difficult pill to swallow bailing out these large companies with large salaries but we have to try get past that and look at how it affects us as a whole.

In reality if we dont help them, then we are all going to suffer.

We also disagree on the loan aspect. Governments dont give away billions of dollars with no strings or plans of return.

In any recession the first companies to suffer are the large ticket items such as auto. They are victims of this recession not the cause.

Personally I dont think line workers are overpaid Im sure alot of people will disagree and most of them out of envy because they dont make the same and think they work harder or had more education ect ect.

However because it is tax dollars we are talking about everyone is completly entitled to their opinion.

Whats important to me is to see the end of this terrible downturn and if that means feeding some fat cats that dont deserve it then so be it.

Leaving the labor issue aside, the facts are that we are in a global economy. Auto manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda are still profitable under current market conditions. The Big 3 are not. Therefore, they are noncompetitive operating under their current business model.

Until the Big 3 can get cost out of their operations, any taxpayer funds given to them will only delay their inevitable failure. We can "whistle past the graveyard" by denying that any problems exist in the Big 3, but that does neither us nor them any favors. It's time for them to hitch up their britches and figure out how to compete with their global competitors - and, yes, the Big 3 compete in Europe, Asia, etc.

40% of the USís autoworkers work in the South for the transplants and they have been successful. Their pay is very good for the area and most plants have thousands on their waiting list for employees. The Big three have an average total compensation of $73/hour worked and the transplants have a total compensation rate of $48 with fully funded retirement. The big three will never be successful until they get the total compensation down. The big three have 3+ retirees for each worker. The 30 and out plan allowed workers to retire at 51 years old making 80% pay with a gold plated healthcare plan. This business model will not work and we can throw money at it forever. People will continue to buy cars and Americans will continue to make cars. After a structured bankruptcy, the management will change and the hugely extravagant labor and retiree plans will be changed and American can get about the business of selling autos to the world again. The 750,000 active and retired autoworkers will be cu back to normal wages, retirements and healthcare plans and we can move on.

Lindsay, What you are advocating, bankruptsy, was what the government did with the business's in 1929. We all know where that got the US. I don't think we want to go there, do we? Indiana Journey

I just heard this morning on CNN that Honda Motors has suspended or cancelled its open wheeled motorsports program due to sluggish sales of its core products.
