Non stop from Alaska to South America in a 1949 Cadillac

Does anyone remember a story about an engineer back in the 50s (I believe) that engineered and built a 49 Cadillac (or maybe earlier) and drove it from Alaska to somewhere in South America?

It was before Interstate Highways, so it probably wasn't really non stop, but as close as they could get to it. Didn't have to stop to change tires, go potty, or re-fuel. It was a pretty interesting story if my memory isn't completely wack-o

Yep, that's it. I did a number of searches and was beginning to doubt my memory, until I finally asked the right question, and spelled all the words correctly.

It was indeed, an amazing accomplishment for the time. Might be able to rig one of the larger SUVs of today, but don't think you could do it in a Cadillac now a days.

As the Time article states it is on display at the Automotive Museum in San Diego's Balboa Park. Saw it there a couple years ago and it is quite a piece of ingenuity and "get 'er done" attitude. I especially liked the in-dash booze dispenser bar. Talk about your drinking and driving!

He didn't drive to South America. Mexico City is in North America.
