The President is coming to Decorah, IA. It's worse then having Nordic Fest close down the downtown. Luther College will be the command post. Hotel Winneshiek will be the abode. I should have rented them my house but you know they probably aren't as tactful as me missing the chicken and dog poo.

Look at a presidential visit from my former point of view (I am a retired police dispatcher, I had to coordinate all that .... stuff)

Lucky lucky you, the cause of your fun is why I tend to want to be far far away till they leave again.

He keeps bashing Las Vegas, but then comes here to help his cronies fund raise. Every time he comes to town, the air space gets shut down. All the Grand Canyon helicopter tours temporarily move to Boulder City, so they're outside the No Fly Zone. Last visit, they extended the zone to 30 miles. The helicopter operators were shut down for his entire visit, and had to refund people for their pre-paid tours.

Strict flying limits during Obama visit to cost air tour operators - News - ReviewJournal.com

Needless to say, we don't like him here. And when Mayor Goodman refused to go see him, stating "I've got more important things to do", he got even more popular than he already was.

Politics and politicians can be a PIA for locals. Years ago when Gary Hart was visiting the UGA I was assigned as a body guard for him. What was I going to do with the Secret Service and all his staff around if something did go south? I basically had to look out for local crazies and crowd prostesters out before they got near him. Wasn't much of a politician, but he did have good taste in ...... er, "staff help" Fileonna Rice and Gary Hart.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Back to Rving. If you live in the area and are planning a trip, make sure you schedule to leave before the commotion or after it is all over. When any of the Presidents come to Los Angeles the freeways get closed down and many roadways also close. This is done without notification so that the bad guys can't plan anything.
As for the Presidential visit. For many, it will be a thrill to be close to our President.
I didn't vote for him, but someone did, and he is our President.

I'm not seeing politics.. I'm seeing the kind of issues I used to have to deal with as a dispatcher (Traffic Disruptions)

As for the politics: Don't matter if POTUS is a Democrat, Republician, Or something else, Don't matter if it's POTUS (President of the United States) or the Queen of England or ____ (Fill in leader of country of your choice)____. Or assorted other "Dignitaries"

All the same from where I sat, and from where I now sit.. Politics is not part of it. Traffic disruption is. Air Traffic, Land Traffic, Water Traffic, wherever a national leader travels, ANY NATION, ANY LEADER.. IT's a pain in the traffic patterns.

DO I wish to avoid such traffic nightmares: YES.

However that said: Some police agencies (Michigan state police for example) will do their darndest to minimize the disruption.. Again, That was part of my duties. Other agencies: I did not work for and thus can not say how well they do.

Last year when the Obam's Vacationed on Mt Desert Island our campground entrance was 200 yds from the airport entrance. RT 3 was shut down for 30 minutes, the only other inconvenience he was on Cadillac Mt when we wanted to go couple hours later all back to normal. RT 3 traffic was detoured through the park while they were here. All in all a pretty cool experience. The snipers in the park overlooking the hotel were something else to see.
