OK, who's the math wiz?
Subtract 9 3/7 from 14 10/14, then tell me how you did it!

you have to change 3/7 to 14's so 3/7's is 6/14's then just subtract and you 5 and 4/14's or 5 and 2/7's

Or, first change the 10/14 to 5/7
Then the subtractions go easier 9 from 14 is 5 and then 3/7 from 5/7 gives your the 2/7. The result is the same 5 and 2/7.
But why or why would you ever come up with this need?

Why not just change 10/14 to 5/7 instead?

Using a Cartesian plain, graph paper, and mad drafting skills, you could plot the points and see the answer.
Or, you can find the lowest common denominator of 14, subtract the two fractions, then divide again to get 5 2/7.
Or, you can convert the fractions to decimals on a calculator, add the quotient, rinse and repeat with the other improper fraction, then subtract one from the other to get the decimal answer.
Or, you can enter 14 10/14 - 9 3/7 in Google.
Or, you can ask any fifth grader.

Actually, the lowest common denominator is 7. The second fraction needs to be normalized before you proceed with the arithmetic.

I figured someone was gonna ask that! This was a question on "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" a week or so ago. That was the answer they had, but somehow I couldn't grasp it. I never was too good at math!

And that kinda cold, (and blaringly obvious), criticism right there is why I pursued Engineering instead of pure mathematics!!

Fixed fractions are the work of the devil! Decimal or leave it improper.
I got a B.S. in Mathematics decades ago, but prefer calculus to fractions.

Heh. I'm an Aeronautical Engineer, actually. Yes, I do (did) rocket science.

The answer is the same either way, why does it matter?? 10/14 and 5/7 are one and the same, no??

Now I know why the engineering on things suck! No math goes into it!
