Old sayings your parents told you….

· You can’t go swimming until after 30 minutes after you eat.
· Put on clean underwear before going somewhere in case you end up in the emergency room.
· Don’t talk to strangers

What do you remember your parents told you?

My dad had lots of old sayings. But always with a twist at the end. Like, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink - but you can sure make him wish he did!

Don't talk back to your mother. Followed by

Come back here you little....

And just about every time I wanted something a friend got that I could not have it was....

If so n so had a bag of "insert word for anything foul" around their neck, would ya want that too?

Again - followed by - Come back here you little.... Never quite got the connection between cool stuff and that bag but did manage to get some pretty cool stuff. Think it was stock first answer to see if I'd bring it up again.

Not a lot of words of wisdom in those days, but plenty of teachable moments. Lol.

Spit in one hand and wish in the another, see which one fills up. (Varying context depending on who was standing there. )

If a bullfrog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass every time he jumped.

You got yourself thrown in jail, you can get yourself out.

(Not many excuses in my household. )

To this day I still don't know "how the cow ate the cabbage. "

No such thing as a free lunch.

Oh yeah, and "Michael, bring me your face!" I always knew that one wouldn't end well.

A stitch in time saves nine.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. (still not sure what that was about)

That's the pot calling the kettle black.

Many more: as my mom was a vast source of old saying and nursery rhymes. She is only 67 now but shared stuff she learned from her grandparents.

When I asked why or why not I heard , "It builds character"
I wondered for a long time what this "character" was but was certain I didn't want anything to do with it!

My dad used to say this when he could care less one way or another.

- "six of one, half a dozen of the other"

And these were also popular with him.

- "Close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades"

- "that dog won't hunt"

- "There's more than one way to skin a cat."

Not quite sure why, but cats used to come up missing a lot in my neighborhood!

My favorite was "This is gonna hurt me more than it does you" which came before I deservedly got my butt tanned. It took me until I had kids before I understood. But I quickly learned that "Well, then don't do it" was not an acceptable response. Then there was the "I'm gonna tan your hide".
