Opioid Rx while traveling

I have severe chronic back pain which canít be fixed. For the last 12 years I've worn a Fentanyl patch for pain control, but they are getting impossible to obtain, especially while traveling and I spend October - May chasing sunshine.

I've decided I need to wean myself off Fentanyl, but worry about what I can use for pain control instead. I've been told by a pain management clinic that they wonít even see me while I'm using it. My southern PCP will no longer prescribe it and I suspect my Seattle area doc won't anymore either.

I am so tired of being made to feel like a criminal. I have never abused any drug and I've never felt any euphoria from my pain meds. I only take what my body needs to be relatively comfortable, but my body has become dependent on the drug, hence the slow weaning.

My pain control choices are limited. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2003 which makes taking NSAIDs dangerous for me. Tylenol is the only OTC pain relief I can use. I also only absorb 40-50% of whatever I take orally which makes pain pills not my best option.

I'm looking for ideas and options, hoping someone here has a great idea or exciting new product.

A pain management specialist sounds like the best bet. Sorry for what you've gone through.

I don't recall the trade name but, if I believe the TV ad, there is a little battery powered box that attaches to skin electrodes. It appears to be a TENS unit without need for a prescription. This jam or blocks pain signals from traveling to the brain. No sedation.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
I have osteoarthritis in both knees and I too take a pain med daily.
I completely understand what you mean about how hard it is to get pain medication anymore and how you are treated like a criminal for trying to get what you need just to get through the day.
I have to go in to see the doctor every 3 months and I'm drug tested to make sure I'm not taking anything I shouldn't and that the level of med in my system is what it's suppose to be and not more. Then the looks you get at the pharmacy when getting your medication filled and GOD FORBID you're going out of town so you try to get it early. Then you REALLY get the looks because it's too early to fill. Can't get it filled till it's been exactly 30 days.
The only thing the war on opioids has done is making it harder for people in chronic pain to get the medication they need to make their life livable.

I agree with the TENS use mine all the time. They are a $100.00 on Amazon. Is your problem Stenosis because that is non fixable as they tell me. I have found for Stenosis Advanced Bio-Curcumin, Ginger, Turmerones, 30 softgels | Life Extension has worked wonders. I have multiple other problems with my back. I work out 5 days a week, do Yoga, and have an inversion table. This summer I will be building a winch that will fit in the hitch that I will use in place of inversion table. Not enough room under the coach for the table and I figure I would trash my back getting it in and out. Pain pills do not work for me so I take nothing and get a massage every chance you get.

This is just disgusting! People who need the drug for valid, supported, well documented medical reasons can't get this stuff, but if you go on the street you can probably buy it by the boatload. This is what happens when the government gets into it and tries to control a problem with one solution that is addressed to the 1% who abuse the stuff and screw all the rest who need it. If they abuse it and die, maybe we just improved the gene pool. Harsh, but the present solutions only hurt those who are doing everything right.

My mother had the patch for several years and it won't get any better for you. My family spent the last 20 years getting my mother to the point where she could live a normal life with little to no opioids. After she went through rehab we could finally figure out what was wrong with here. After having back surgery she was still having pain, so the only other thing there was to try was a spinal cord stimulator. This is a wire that they implant under your skin to block the pain and she has what looks like an iPhone with an app on it to control it. It did take some time to get it programmed right, but she does seam to be in less pain and happier. She is to the point where she can no longer take opioids and if you are on the patch you are probably not far from where she was. Its a shame that the doctors ruined my mother and she is likely to never be the same as she was. If you are on the patch and surgery won't work for you I would look into this it worked for my mom.

^^^ talk to an Interventional Pain Physician and find out if you are a candidate for a Stim Trial.

Barb, CBD oil taken by mouth? I have friends it works for. It has no hallucinogenic properties and was legal in all the states until Kansas decided to outlaw it.

Acupuncture has a very good track record for relieving pain. Might be worth a try.

If you travel a lot out of your area, and use a major pharmacy such as CVS or Walgreens, you can have your prescription transferred to your new locations. This typically adds only a day to the process. Check with your pharmacy.

This does not work for opioids and many out of state pharmacies will not accept a written prescription.

It is miserable getting pain meds. Yep, they make you think you are a criminal. Impossible to get more than 30 days worth.

Treating everyone like a criminal is the way government "solves" problems these days. Can't even buy OTC cold meds without signing for it at the pharmacy, in Illinois.

After multiple injections I had low back de-compression surgery in 2017. He cut my spinal sack which led to two more surgeries. I have been on so many meds, now I've been trying a "BUSTRANS PATCH" I was shocked how well it works for me. Last week I had shoulder surgery and the patch is really helping. This patch is not Opiates, so it's easy to get while out state I hope this helps.
