parking brakes

this is for the beginners. when you've come down a long hill riding your brakes and got them hot. now you want a break and find the first stop to take one. don't set that parking brake and walk off let the drums cool down. if you have ever had a brake pedal that pumped up and down, your drums are or were out of round. (hot drums with unequal presure inside pushing out, held there while cooling.) this does not apply to those of you that have the parking brake on the transmission or drive shaft. you're off the hill relax and cruise for a while letting your drums cool.

worked in a shop when i was young. drove trucks and heavy equip. for 35 years was a electrican for 7 years the retired. and no i was taught right how to drive a long time ago. but seen a lot of accidents waiting to happen. the worst local accident i've came on. was a one ton chevy dump body loaded down with cosmetic stone pulling a trailer with a 4 ton tractor on it. half way down the hill there is a cross street. now the fool drive past 2 truck runnaway turn outs. when he got to the cross street he made a right and turned everything over. the poor people (cars) there scattered every where they could. on center dividers, wrong side of the road, etc. was a wonder more people didn't get hurt. there are some people out there that their dream is to retire and buy an rv and travel. but have never driven anything but a car. their thought (i'm an engineer how hard can it be). in one of my yards we had one such. new 5th wheel first trip 100 miles burnt the brakes off the truck. disconnecting from the 5th wheeler didn't put the landing gear down drive off. the bed said ouch. now after 1 year later would pull up to the yard (frist time i've ever seen tag team backing) they would take turns backing after 1/2 hour still were not thru gate. found out were ever they went they would get someone to park the rig for them (our street was industrial property, our moving trucks could make circles in the street, wide street). fyi-- we had a bar next door so yes we would watch and laugh (the bet was how long was it going to take to get thru the gate). after about 1/2 hour one of us would back it in the yard for them. watched maybe 2 or 3 times not that big of an a__hole. i've seen a guy try to pull a 30ft cabin cruiser (3axle trailer) with a corair. always wondered if he got it in the water how he pulled it back up the boat ramp. these are the ones this post is for.

After reading your post I can only think that there are some people out there that just shouldn't be. Training should be mandatory.

it amazes me that they let anyone buy and drive a vehicle with airbrakes. not putting anyone down, driving something 25,000 lbs or bigger and 35-40 foot is a big difference than driving a 3000 lb car. just for safety should be mandatory to be certified. imho. should have to take the commerical license test. i've had a commerical license since i was 18 (61 now).

To go along with what you said, you shouldn't ride the brakes on anything enough to get them that hot. The vechicle needs to be geared down at the top of hill to avoid hot brakes.
