In June we went to the Post Office and applied for our passports. I had heard of how long it was taking to get one so we started in June for our trip to Canada in September. Two weeks ago Dianne got a letter from United States Department of State saying the her birth certificate needed a raise seal before they could issue her one. Well I did not have a raised seal on mine either. I called my congressman office for some help or what to do. They gave me website of a place that could get us birth certificates in five to seven working days. Well I went to the website and filled out the imformation along with my credit card number it was $140 for the two certificates. Well two days later my passport came alone with my old birth cerificate. it has been over two weeks and no cerificates from the place our congressman's office told me to go. I called them and found out North Carolina is taking over two weeks to issue them. If we get Dianne's cerificate we can go to Canada as long as we are driving and have that we have applied for a passport. I guess this is Uncle Sam looking out for us.

Tom,

Apparently there are several million US citizens who have recently chosen not to go to Canada, many for issues involving passport confusion.

Do you just want to have a passport for the extra feeling of security? Are you traveling by air? Are you aware passports are not currently required for travel by land and sea travelers yet? Those travelers can still use a birth certificate plus a photo ID until sometime between summer 2008 and June 2009. The passport is only required now for air travel.

Here's a news article I just read about it:

U.S. Visitation to Canada Continues to Decline

RV Business
Thursday, August 16, 2007

Overall U.S. visits to Canada have slumped by more than one-third over the past five years, and same-day car trips are down nearly 50%. And the outlook for 2007 isn't much better, says Randy Williams of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada.

"We thought things couldn't get worse after 9/11 and SARS (the health scare that sparked a sharp drop in Canadian tourism in 2003). But they have," says Anna Pierce, head of Niagara Falls Tourism.

According to USA Today, the Ontario-based organization has seen foreign visitors (nearly 70% of whom are from the USA) decline from almost 14 million in 2000 to 11 million last year, and it expects another drop of about 5% this year.

What's dampening U.S. demand:

"¢ Confusion over new passport regulations. Since Jan. 23, U.S. citizens re-entering the country by air from Canada must carry a passport; land and sea travelers can still use a birth certificate plus a photo ID until sometime between summer 2008 and June 2009. On June 8, after an unanticipated surge of applications and processing delays, the U.S. State Department announced that it would accept a government-issued photo ID and a passport application receipt from air travelers through Sept. 30. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is proposing a limited-use passport card that would be a less-expensive alternative for U.S. citizens who cross the Canadian border by land or sea.

"¢ Concern about security-related delays at border crossings. Though heavy traffic associated with Monday's Canadian holiday sparked lengthy backups for U.S.-bound lanes on Niagara Falls' Rainbow Bridge, typical waits are 10 minutes or less, Pierce says.

"¢ A strong Canadian dollar and higher gas prices. The Canadian "loonie" has gained more than 10% in value this year, hitting a 30-year high against the U.S. dollar last month. This week, the loonie was worth 94.92 U.S. cents, and, according to GasBuddy.com, gas cost an average of $3.26 a gallon in Canada vs. $2.82 in the USA.

"¢ Canada's elimination of a tax-rebate program for individual foreign travelers. Before April 1, visitors who spent at least $200 Canadian on goods and short-term accommodations could apply for a refund of a 6% federal sales tax.

Another worry: A survey showing that many young U.S. travelers dismiss Canada as an "average" or "boring" place to visit. "We've got tons of exotic product here, from heli-hiking to dogsledding," says Williams of the Tourism Industry Association. "But you've got to spend money to change perceptions </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yes Richard I am aware of this but right now Dianne got no birth certificate as it is in Louisana. If we get the new ones this week she will be good to go. We started earily, but never thought we would have all this problem. We still have three weeks before we leave.(we have got two copies coming, one to sent to State Dept and one for us to go on)

we got the birth certificates and have sent one off the Lousiana and maybe it will be back in time. The birth certificate is all we need if we driving.

Which would you rather lose? A passport with a trackable number on it or your Birth certificate? I'll go get the passport, myself. Least then I can report the passport as being stolen to the folks who issue them, where as its kind of difficult to contact anyone that your birth certificate is missing.

I returned from Canada yesterday by car via Sault Ste Marie.

You do not need a birth cert or a passport.

All you need is a photo ID such as a driver's license.

You'll need a passport starting 1/1/08 if returning by car.

You're traveling again! Good - that means Diane's back has improved. Glad to hear that.

I believe the requirement for passports to Canada and Mexico that was scheduled to take place in '08 has been put off until '09 due to the huge backlog of requests.
I do know the feds were looking for interns (read 'free help') from colleges to help get these things processed and sent back out to the applicants.
Good luck on your trip - wish we were headed out as well.
