I used to pay taxes. Now this poor pensioner doesn't have to any more. I still have to file though.

It's not as bad as the UK. Their equivalent of sales tax just went to 20%, nation wide and it's a lot higher on "luxury" goods (jewelry in particular). Their income tax rate starts at 40% and can get to more than 80% at income over a certain level. Back in the 1950's they had a rate of 105% on all earnings above about a senior management level in a large company.

Want to know one of the reasons your taxes are so high? How about this one. A lady comes into our office. She is single and lives in a very nice house with her boyfriend. They have two kids. She has a W-2 of $25,000. With all the child credits and earned income credits she gets a refund of (are you ready for this?) $11,000. America, what a country!!!!

I always thought you couldn't get back more than you paid in. There I go thinking again. He's a tax guy, I think. There I go again

I'm not saying that I like paying them, but isn't our tax rate this year as low as it was 50 years ago? As previously posted, be happy your not in the UK

I don't know about that specific story, but I have had a tax preparer friend of mine relate many such stories. I hear 47% of the populace pay no taxes. I wonder if that number includes those that get more back than they paid in? What a country!

And it only gets better (sarcasm you know) the more you know...

Another story... I had to update my SS info so went to local office. While waiting I struck up a conversation with the lady next to me. She relates that both she and her husband are managers at Walmart or major grocery chain, live in an upscale neighborhood, drive nice newer cars and between them they have 6 kids from current and previous relationships. She tells me that she pays no federal or state taxes except consumption taxes and is there to apply for SS suplemental income... Bet she got it.
