Percy Sledge is dead!

I'm sure some of you old codgers remember Percy Sledge singing "When a man loves a woman". He died yesterday at 73.

Yes, I remember him. We had him in concert at my little Po-Dunk Tech school when I was about 18 years old.

Never saw him in concert...but really loved the song when it was released. It was a big hit at the prom 👍💑.

We saw him in concert in Maggie Valley, NC a few years back. He had not forgotten how to sing that song!

Percy Sledge was raised 6 miles down the road from our house. I always considered him a one hit wonder. Saw him at a big festival in Memphis, and let me just say he was no Arthur Alexander--another local singer.

The 60's and 70's were incredible with Muscle Shoals recording hits by Aretha Franklin, Cher, Rolling Stones, Wilson Pickett, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding and dozens more. And many of the same studio musicians and engineers continue working here and in Nashville.

Can't remember when I first heard that song, but seems like it's been around forever! I'm 78, but could swear that song was popular when I was in my teens - guess not. Anyhow, I would have thought he wss a lot older than 73.

RIP Percy.

IMO his best song was "Take Time to Know Her".

When I visited the Stax museum in Memphis I bought a DVD of a star studded live show done in Memphis when the museum opened that included a tremendous performence by Sledge and an electrifying one by Rance Allen.

If you have interest in a video history of Stax, there is a great PBS version that played a few years ago. Unfortunately, I have not found it, but haven't checked their site for a while either it may be available now. I know there is another Stax DVD available but it's not the same.
Can't beat R & B from the '60's.
He will be missed.
Tom
