Les, you have too much time on your hands. Time to go fry some bacon.

I got a text on my cell phone today saying I had won a Best Buy contest that I know I never entered. I am on the "No Call List". Would it do any good to report that? I deleted it without replying.

I got the same one and just deleted it. The scum are getting craftier. The link was Bestbuy.net not .com so it looked real.

I've received some really good Bank of America ones. GF had her email address book hacked. I could tell right away and knew before she did.

Here is a NEW one to me. Have had it twice this week. I get a CALL on my home phone. Someone on the other end, trouble with english and the background noise of a BIG boiler room telling me that my computer has been sending out spam messages and they want to take control of my computer to "help me" get rid of the virus that is infecting my "windows" computer. Let her ramble for a few minutes then called her bluff as I use Macs exclusively. IF she could speak english and IF you could not hear all the boilerplate noise in the background I can see where some folks could be taken in by this new scam. So.........tell folks you know to beware of this new telephone scam.

It wouldn't have gotten that far with me. I have my phone line plugged into my computer and the default Micros**t fax program loaded. When a call comes in, the fax program pops up the number and if I don't recognize it, they get fax tone. Doesn't seem to have stopped them, though.

I did that once and they called back and sent me a fax. I was for someone with the same name and they were trying to collect some monies.

I've seen a lot of spam over the years and the different tactics they use. Some random tips:
  • If the email address is not from a .com, .net, or .org, this should throw up a red flag in most cases. Not always but it's a good first step.
  • Check the rest of the sender's domain name (the part after the @ symbol). People will try to fool you with a legit company name. Instead of sending from support@paypal.com they are sending from support@pay-pall.com or something similar.
  • If you are uncertain, and there are links in the email, do not click on them. Depending on your email client (I use Mozilla Thunderbird), you can simply hover over a link and in the bottom left corner it shows you the actual path/url. You may think you are clicking on www.paypal.com when you're really clicking on www.sdgjhsgdjshgf.yt/scam/hacker/fsjhgfjshdg. Clearly spam.
  • In a lot of cases, the grammar and punctuation are so terrible that there's no way it can be a legit email.
  • And do not open any attachments if you think it's spam.
Hope this helps!

I used to "View Source" with Outlook Express. It showed just about everything. Haven't figured out how with Thunderbird Earlybird.
