Discussion on Fox was based on WSJ Article and the emphasis was that some prescription medicines are fine past their arbitrary expiration date, particularly the one assigned by the pharmacist. It is up to one year from dispensing, the drug mfgr's date may be 2-3 years more. Bottom line was Doctor doing the study stated she would not tell her patients to use expired meds.
Article was based on a study by the FDa for the DOD. Results showed that many (not all) drugs are still effective up to 5 1/2 years after the drop dead date...
At the request of the Department of Defense, the FDA conducted a major study of the shelf-life of common medications.

Two medicines mentioned that should not be extended were Nitroglycerine and Insulin....

That makes some sense. The challenge to the manufacturers is they'd have to do shelf life testing for a longer period of time than perhaps is financially viable for a product. The dates selected are based on the shelf life testing performed and perhaps once they see a little degradation in a product, that's the date chosen.

As for expiration dates: Many things affect the shelf life of drugs

Exposure to light, heat and humidity being the primary items on the list...

The drug companies thus put on a date that is as conservative as possible, This is for two reasons.

ONE: is they can not control those variables, and thus assume the worst.

And the real reason: PROFIT!

The sooner you "Recycle" the more profit they make:

Finally: Do not throw them away.. Your pharmacist can advise you on the local safe disposal method (Often a fire department or a pharmacy) If you toss 'em or flush 'em they tend to end up in the ground water and there are too many drugs there already.

If you ask Your doctor or pharmacist they SHOULD say, follow the expiration date. The reason is simple, if anything goes wrong they have assumed profession responsibility beyond the manufacturer. Many of the medications we (the population in general) take are given in dosages with very broad safety and effective ranges. If your medication is 10% or 20% less effective the results are not critical. Some mediations such as tetracycline and it's relatives, Tylenol, and many chemotherapeutics break down into toxic products with age. Warfarin and other medications are poorly absorbed or tightly bound to body proteins, and as such only a very small percentage, sometimes as little as 2% represent an effective dose. Thus, even a small change in the tablet due to age will represent a large change in the end effect. Many antibiotics deteriorate with time, however, since many are given without cultures and sensitives, and are misused anyway, what difference does it really make...unless of course you are taking an outdated medication to save yourself a trip to the doctor for a significant infection.
In short, the topic of expired medication is extremely complex. The DOD did a long term study, I think in the late 70's, to see if medications held by the VA in storage could safely be used in an emergency. I believe they published back then that many medications could safely be dispensed BY PROFESSIONALS in emergencies.
Hopes this helps some make a personal decision regarding the safety of their medicine cabinets.
Gary, Retired Pharmacist.

My druggist tells me (I ask ) what the expiration is on the bottle he fills mine from. It's always longer than one year.

Probably not, but they are cheap and at the point I need(ed) one I don't want my DW saying "I told him he should have refilled that scrip!"

Back to prescription meds,-- since I try to abide by the "use by" dates on food products, it not likely I would use out of date medicines... (although some 12 year old single malt cough syrup is really good)
