Now THIS is what riding the rainbow seems to be about. Going places we never thought we would go 2 years ago. We have spent 3 days in the Mackinaw City, MI area. Morning temps in the upper 50s, by noon near 70.
Yesterday started a tad cloudy with a small bit of rain but by noon was sunny. A little breezy so we opted to do the boat ride to Mackinac Island today. Instead we toured Mackinaw City and all the fudge shops. MMMMMMMMM (this theme will repeat) We really enjoyed our tour of the USGC Mackinaw ( Mighty Mac) ice breaker. WOW, what a boat! Decommissioned in 2006 but still intact. Mighty Mac NEVER failed to meet its mission...NEVER! Needless to say we left the boat impressed with it.
Today was FANTASTIC. It was sunny, very light breeze and we had a great ride to and from Mackinac Island. Yes, a bit touristy but we were amazed at the history of it all. And more freakin' much fudge that that you can swim in it. MMMMMMMMMM
I also got to re-aquaint myself with one of my favorite eats when I was stationed near Detroit. The...PASTY! (Not pasties you dirty minded old farts. LOL) A pasty is kinda like a pot pie filling folded into a crust pocket and just plain, ole, good eating. Heading into the UP we will be in pasty country for the next week.
Then there is the great lake white fish. Another dietary delight.
Tomorrow morning we leave for our Newmar Rally but this little taste of the north part of the LP really was our first, big surprise of what we hope is a long list of surprises as we meander our way on the rainbow.
Days like the last few are just what makes the journey such a remarkable destination.

We were there last summer. Took that route home after a rally in Goshen, Indiana. Had to laugh at the "fudge war" - which was the original, first and best! We crossed Mackinaw Bridge to head north back to Canada. Afraid I chickened and used the free driver service. I am not good with heights and was afraid I might "freeze" part way across! It is a beautiful area. We were at the Mackinaw KOA for 3 days and had the same weather in August. There was a free shuttle into town from the campground. It amazed me to be told the population in summer was over 10,000 and in winter less than 1000. Apparently most of the hotels just shut down!

Back in the day when I was an officer in the Navy league cadets in Sault Ste Marie Ontario we invited the staff of the "Mac" (then stationed in SSM MI) to attend our cadet review. They were impressed and offered our cadet band members a ride on the old girl. I got to accompany the cadets and we were all impressed with the Breaker. I didn't realize she was decommissioned.

Not sure what hwy you are taking but if you head out M28 there is a super PASTY place in Seney at the Seney Country Inn Restaurant.

The whole area took a s*** kicking when the government closed down Kincheloe AFB and the population plummeted.
My DW was terrified to cross the bridge but once we got about to the middle she started to get into looking around at everything.

First Pass at a FE SOGC@CL List
I did no editing - or clean up - just good clean cut and paste of the entries I have received for.... wait for it....
Location suggestions for the, wait for it......
First EVER SON Of Grande Curiosity --- one pdf file located here:
http://rvmutants.com/rvm-events.html
The file is called...
First Ever Son of GC @ CL Suggestions (PDFile Latest Ideas from Mutant Family)
Some are specific places - some contain ideas on what we should do - some are non-specific like Branson or Nevada... but take a look get your mutant thinking caps on - synapses firing - and otherwise get to pondering location and other ideas for the FE SOGC...
RVM2 - Steve and Annie
On Edit - there is a suggestion from DaveDeb... to Go to RGV - and one from Papaw Steve that came in while I was compiling the list... and one from MoonRover.... eek... that came over on the Contact Us form - and weren't in my data inbox... sorry about that - I do see them all and save them (even cherish them) no matter how they are submitted to the website - but I did forget to merge them. I will fix that next time.

LOL.... squawking like I promised to bring ya bail money and then rolled over and went back to sleep... Oh my....
There is a form - on the website - when you mouse over RVM Events you will see 2015 Son of First Ever GC Suggestion Form - if you click on it the form is there. But as I edited my post above - I do have your suggestion and will add it to the list next time...
Let me know if I need to come to you and show you how to get to the form - and we can have a mini-c right then and there.... 😁

Teams are starting to drop like flies but we're still in it. Three more days of bracket play to whittle down to qtr. finals. Teams are here from all over the country. This is our first time at a World Series Event and it is exciting stuff! Will keep ya posted on progress but in the meantime, enjoy the rainbow.
Mike and Harriet it's good to hear from you guys. Speaking of which..... My buddy Wayne hasn't chimed in. Has he or did I miss it?
Don't look at the bikinis, especially the Mankinis. Barb can watch the later for you.

ONLY if you see some young, trim, hunky males in mankinis give me a yell. If they look like the last over the hill, round is a shape also types... I'll pass, thank you very much.

BTW...no matter how you spell it, Mackinaw or Mackinac it is pronounced Mackinaw. The "C" in Mackinac is the French version as is silent.
As far as a GC up here, Mackinaw Mille Creek Campground, is HUGE. It isn't as polished as CL and is also much more packed in. It is a popular place for folks from all directions.
Mackinaw City is certainly a "touristy" kind of place. If anyone has been to the The Dells in WI, they might feel this is a close cousin. Still, it has captured our attention and we would like to come back in a couple years.
I haven't asked the locals if this cool weather is common. I have enjoyed the coolness. I would think anything before June would be asking for cold weather to be prevalent. But according to this, it is unusually cool.
I've heard great things about places west of here along Lake Michigan too. Petosky is often mentioned.
|
As mentioned above, 15 years ago we stashed in Petosky. I believe we stayed in a KOA. The town was beautiful, very walkable. The whole area is picturesque.
Once on Mackinac Island, if they are still doing it, the The Grand Hotel is a must see. It was featured in at least one movie.

Just read over the suggestions for the FESOGC and liked many. Steve and whom ever he confides in will have a tough decision and as we all know some will be tossed out. Have to add one more cause I know many want to get their groove on at The Grove RV Park.
