Les,

Sena says it's the Universe telling you it's time to sell the S & B and go full time. And snakes are thick after a big meal. Have you taken a head count of the pets and livestock?

All livestock accounted for. Selling S&B an option. Retiring not an option unfortunately.

Another Curiosity in the Books.

Well, ANOTHER Curiosity/paradox ended this morning.

Sue and Martin are AWESOME folks with experiences that will keep many a fire circle enthralled. Truly a pleasure to spend time with.

Rigatonni is a very nice coach indeed and looks like it will get very well used. They plan a few more "tweaks" for it in the near future but when it is done...These 2 are going places!

Now it has been some years back, but the county extension office told my friend the best way to get rid of rattlers, is to get an outside cat. A barn cat they said. Seems the cat would take care of any small critters like field mice, and if the snakes had no food they would go elsewhere. It worked. The snakes were gone shortly after they went to the shelter and brought home some cats. Good luck.

I've heard that having guinea fowl on your property will keep you snake free. Three out of 4 Google search links agreed. This is the one I found most informative and credible.

Guineas- Basic Information

I've also heard peafowl will keep snakes away, but their screams are too unnerving-- they sound like a woman being murdered.

Back in my "back to nature" days, I bought 2 acres of land in very rural Oklahoma -- 5 miles east of pavement and 1 mile west of the Muddy Boggy.

Armed with 65 back issues of Mother Earth News and my teenage daughter, I planted 15 fruit trees, built a chicken coop and stocked it with 12 hens and a nasty bad rooster, planted a garden and set out to build our paradise.

We were befriended by an elderly couple who had followed the same path 25 years prior to us and had SO much practical knowledge about country life. They kept guineas and goats and swore they never had a live snake anywhere near their house or outbuildings because of the guineas.

Steve,

I have an idea for another mutant book -- a dictionary of mutant usernames. I know that several have explained their username here, but it would be nice to have a complete reference index copy.

With that in mind, I'll add or repeat my username story.

OKMUNKY

When I first got on the Internet I was looking for a username. What was important in my life then and still today? Monkeys. So of course that is where I looked for a name I could remember. I tried several versions of spelling before finding that m-u-n-k-y was available, but it was too short the next time I needed a username so I added O-K, the state I was living in at the time, to the front end.

The nice thing about using a bastardized spelling is that it is usually available when you need a new username. Nowadays everything needs a username.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Understandable when a user name discloses information it is intended to conceal.
