Well...time to check in.

I don't mean to be a bummer but it has been a rough couple months and this week seems to just take the cake. A few days ago I managed to land myself in the hospital over night because of flu like symptoms. You know us guys...we tend to gut it out until it might be too late. After last year's bout of pneumonia I am less likely to wait too long but still waited much too long for Sandee. I spent nearly 2 days in bed with a fever from 100-102 thinking it would pass. Finally, if I hadn't agreed to go to the ER she would have given me a real reason to be there. LOL A couple bags of fluids, some other meds they let me go the next morning. I'm now doing MUCH better.

Sandee's shoulder surgery recovery is going pretty well but my 3 days of being sick put a lot of strain on her. I suppose I really didn't recognize how scared she was for me and that was a lot of the stress. However, managing our 2 fur kids was hard on her physically. Well...especially working with Gunny was hard.

Sadly, Gunny's time has come and we have made the dreaded appointment for this coming Saturday at 11:30 to release him to the rainbow bridge. It will be a few days short of our 10 year anniversary for when we picked him up at the airport to join our family. The hard part is that this damn Degenerative Myelopathy is robbing him of his physical capabilities but keeps the brain intact like MD/ALS. Watching him waste away is killing me.

With the cloudy times that started a little over 2 months ago with the passing of Thor the rainbow has been a little muted. Zeus has helped brighten things up at times. However, the clouds haven't really parted knowing the Gunny's time was coming to an end. It has been like a slow motion train wreck that you know is coming but you can't stop it.

I know you will all wish us the best of wishes and ohmms during this rough patch. While we haven't been cruising the rainbow this year as much as we wanted, we don't regret the changes to our plans given the circumstances we have been given.

We will be on the road starting the 14th for about a month as we travel eastward to WV, NC, SC and KY for about a month before coming back to IL. I think that is what we need to begin the process of regaining our STM mojo. We really need this trip.

On a lighter note...

Sandee left me a cute surprise after being sick. After getting back form the hospital and my fever breaking we have monitored my temps often. I typically run about 97* but this morning it was down to 96.1* so I asked her where our back up thermometer was and she told me to look in my medicine cabinet. After I opened it up she said she heard me laugh harder than she had in a long time. This is what I saw.

Hello Don !!!

We are always wishing you and Sandee the best, I know its not easy letting the fur kids go but sometimes they need that freedom that can only be had by crossing their own rainbow bridge, Gunny will reunite with Thor and Zeus will help you carry on. But in the meantime many oooommmmmssss being sent your way.

ATTENTION, YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ A SARCASTIC REMARK!
Do not think that I have no feelings for those involved or their families!
You have been warned!

Dave I'm not sure Maggie valley is that great a place. It's in NC and they have a lot of Shark attacks there!

I'll be returning to my nice, careing self now, and thank you!

So sorry to hear about this. Our 14 year old Springer, Sam, is running on borrowed time as well. Know that there are others out there who feel and share your pain.

I breathed a sigh of relief that you are both mending well. I think we all knew Gunny's time was very short... I'm surprised he has done ok for this long...I'm impressed ya'll have had the fortitude to keep up with his needs with all that's gone on. When it's time, it's time... spoil him until Saturday and breathe a sigh of joy you were able to help him pass over easily. Then hit the road and enjoy the rainbow.

Don and Sandee - - - Really happy that complete healing is in sight for your recent health setbacks.

Really tough to lose a friend and partner of 10 years. Remember Gunny with fond memories and let go with a giggle when you remember some especially funny moments with him. The hurt you feel watching his struggles makes the hurt in your decision to have him join the heavenly rainbow seem a little easier to take.

Enjoy your travels. See ya later (down the road).

Sandee and Don, so many have said so much already and so well, Nola and can only add best wishes for further quick recovery, and we salute Gunny for being a trooper and a friend to us.
