I had a 17' Ranger bass boat with a 150 Mer in the late 80s. Power trim and all. A on a good day, it would do 65. It was pretty much flat bottom, so I could get into shallow coves.

Just went through some of my tackle boxes and found, among memories, some lures that have never been wet; still in their original boxes. Power Bait, poppers, rubber worms, trout lures, etc.

I used to modify Roland top water poppers to imitate the high dollar ones; forget the name. Nothing like a surface bite. I remember one time, a big bass jumped out of the water before my Sonic hit it. The lure popped out of it's mouth and came flying straight back at me. Hit me below the belt. Glad it was only 3/8 oz lure.

I made some "slow day" Blue Gill lures out of pistachio 1/2 shells. Embedded a hook and feather with silicone seal and painted them by hand.

Just looked in the closet where my rods/reels are and found many more lures and mini-tackle boxes with bass and trout lures. Some of those still in the package. Lot of gas money just layin' there.

Haha!
The summer is for fishing too in MN, ya know? Between June and July.
In younger years, ice fishing happened primarily because construction work stopped at about 10 below. Really!

Dunner, thought about opening a tackle shop. Wow!
My BIG boat was 14 ft with an 18 johnson. Didnt keep me off Lake Superior!

Mutant fishing

If you guys want to do some real mutant fishing you should check into noodling! I used to live in Okalohoma where some folks are crazy enough to go fishing without any tackle. They just stick a hand or a foot into a hole and pull out giant catfish, mostly flatheads. Rumor has it that the record catch is about 70 pounds, but we all know about how those who fish tend to exaggerate.

My dad would wade into the creek (pronounced crick), grab a snapping turtle about 50 lbs by the tail, and drag it out backwards up on the bank as fast as possible, and I would lop the top with a hatchet.
Will not add gorry yet amusing details.
Made lots of soup!
Not quite as good as fishin, and over in a hurry, but the adrenaline rush (from sheer terror) was fantastic!
I was about 6.
