Used to watch the flares all the time in VN and sometimes they would stay up for 2 or 3 minutes, which seemed like a very long time.

Thanks for your explanation Wayne. My only question would be: Why?

I had a great view of that the other night, a big halo around the moon. It was amazing but couldn't get the picture (cheapo phone cameras I guess). Glad you caught it!

Martin, most likely it is a military operation, or even a testing area. The desert is a vast expanse of testing area. I think you are safe from extraterrestrials. However, click you heels three times and see if you end up in Kansas. You have just as great a chance doing that.

Luke AFB told News 5 they were not doing any testing, but others may be. Well if Luke doesn't know what's in the air I'll eat my hat. They're not saying and no one was volunteering. I say they're here, they're mutant and they're our friends...

As I left Yuma I drove north on US-95 thru the Army's Yuma Proving Grounds. Lots of top secret stuff goes on there I'd imagine -- even a landing port for our galactic brethren perhaps? The desert has many secrets.

Do they hang together in clusters?

I've heard if you count the number of stars inside the halo, you'll know how many days it is to the next rain. Big circle, many stars.

It's more picturesque to think of it that way than the perfectly valid scientific explanation. Ice crystals preceding a storm system and so on.
