The village of Lincoln (in the same county as Ruidoso - Lincoln County) is where Billy the Kid was jailed. When I was 6 yrs old, we lived in Vega, TX. My dad was pastor there. One day, Dad took me to meet one of the very old, shut-in church members: Grandma Ivey. It was 1957. He wanted me to hear her tell the story of when she was a little girl and saw Billy the Kid.

I still remember it. Her dad was a deputy in Lincoln County and one time on his day off he took his little girl to town ... Lincoln. They were walking down the boardwalk, and when they neared the Sheriff's office and jail, the door opened and out came the Sheriff, escorting a young man who was shackled and handcuffed. The prisoner dropped to one knee, held out his cuffed hands and said, "Well hi there, little girl."

At the same time, Grandma Ivey's dad whisked her to the other side of him, so he was between her and the young prisoner. He led her past the men, then stopped, leaned down and said, "Honey, don't talk to him. That's Billy the Kid."

I met a woman who saw Billy the Kid! We are always closer to history than we realize.
Great story, Mel! I always feel the same way when I walk in the footsteps of history -- up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC for instance.

And speaking of Lincoln -- the 8/21/17 full lunar eclipse will come ashore near Lincoln City, Oregon which just so happens to be in Lincoln County.

At first, I thought it was really strange, because Hesston is a mostly Mennonite town and they are all Pacifists, although they are pro gun because they hunt. Found out through later reports the fella had a long criminal history in Florida, so that puzzle was solved... he was a disgruntled transplant. Don't know what set him off though, yet. No reports of people we know being the ones who wound up dead, haven't heard if any friends were injured, but we know plenty of people who worked there, just maybe not on that shift. Ommms to the families who lost their loved ones.
So very sad. Hope all your friends and loved ones in those communities are okay. I'm sure some of them are a little traumatized by something so awful happening in their town.

Many ommms sent out to the families and friends of those who were killed. Such a tragedy.

Lincoln Memorial will do it to you, for sure. And the Jefferson Memorial. And Arlington National Cemetery....

We decided last night that we are going to be in Oregon the summer of 2017 for any GC that happens on the Oegon Coast. Lincoln Counyy, Oregon. Perfect!

By the way, Barb, we are taking Bow put to Palo Euro next weekend for a shake down run. Taking my precious great nephew Brody and his mom with us! His mom is pretty special, too! My 87 year old mom is going to drive down for the day on Saturday. She wouldn't miss an opportunity to see her great grandson!

Well that lady might have been my kin. My maternal grandmother was an Ivey, last name, but from Ivey, Georgia. They came over before the Rev War. But who knows.

Marty sorry to hear that. Ohms.

Ohms to those in physical and emotional pain in Kansas. What a sad day.

The continuing saga of emotionally crippled folks that assault innocent people of all ages.

I'm among the ever growing group of people that feel that the spineless slugs that commit these atrocities should NEVER have their pictures shown on TV or in the newspaper. They should never have their names spoken either. Just refer to them as the "deranged shooter" or " the wasted pieces of human flesh" when telling the sad story of their twisted behavior. Their "15 minutes of fame" would be totally in vain. No one knows who they were. There is no story that would ever explain their behavior. Millions of people have a tough time growing up and don't act that way. In fact, many achieve great things in spite of their troubled childhoods.

Rant over.

Deputy Ivey in Lincoln County, New Mexico may well have migrated there from Georgia. Who knows, indeed. Back when NM was a territory, people from all over went there for free or cheap land. Wish you could get on that PBS show where they trace your roots back. We'd know for sure then! But, lets say you are distantly related to Deputy Ivey and his daughter. Would be a nice thing to add to a sequel to MRLG!

Yes, more ohmmmms for Kansas, Marty.

Billy the Kid, Lincoln Nebraska, and eclipse points all in a row! What say we line up for the RVM00N show in Oregon and race it to Lincoln? Oh, wait, it would be reverse of that.
Still mostly baby dreams for me. Our Great Grand is halfway baked and we find out what gender to spoil the bajeebers out of on Tuesday!
Mel, Kate, et al, Dead Horse is about 4 months before the FEGC@M&M!

Just got here from a day of slacking.

Great story, Mel! Could make a movie clip or a detail in MARLG.

And such a sad and frightening event, Marty. Any more it seems that such could happen to any innocent bystander any time, anywhere. What have we come to?! Ommms for all concerned.

On another note, we found a Mexican grocery nearby, and I had a grand time picking and choosing. No Hatch chilis, canned or otherwise, but: Achiote paste was there, along with dried hibiscus flowers (for tea), freshly-cooked chicharrones and pickled ... ready for this? ... pigs ears. Yes, I brought them all back. Plus pan dulce, which seems to be a cross between bread and cake, tasting rather like caramel or molasses. I'd never tasted any before. Good with butter.

Neighbors here are saying Yuma in March & April will be windy and dusty and HOT! Oh dear. We will brave anything to join up with other mutants, however, hardy souls that we are. Hardy souls with air conditioning, that is. 🙄

Weather here has been perfect. A body could live outdoors most of the time. For now.

Cheers!

Oh. We are at Aux Arc Campground. A great COE park on the Arkansas River near the city of Ozark. And it is pronounced Ozark.
