Upper Michigan Grand Curiosity (UMGC)

Just got off the phone with Marisa at MMCC (Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping).

Michigan schools end their summer break with the Labor Day weekend (September 3 next year). She said that the cg is usually maxed out in August.

Waterfront sites are small (50' x 25'). She said that only 30 amp is available and there's really not room for the tow vehicle. She recommended areas 18 and 19 that is near the rally pavilion. The pavilion would be ours to use for $200.

Areas 18 and 19 are for big rigs. 50/30 amp with FHU. Rates have not been determined for 2018 yet but this year it's $34 + tax. This area is a 5 minute walk to Lake Huron and the lakeshore is open to all campers. No firewood can be brought in to the park A firepit and wood can be brought to each campsite and there's a charge for wood. A large load of wood can be delivered. Of course, if no fires are allowed due to drought, well you know the routine on that.

When we establish a timeline for our GC and call Marisa with the dates, we have X number of sites reserved for 1 (I say 1) month. If a reservation is made during that month and then cancelled, the deposit is returned minus a $4 fee. So if we call Marisa in early January we have until early February to call her with our reservation. Stragglers could be added, but perhaps not in the RV Mutant reserved area.

That's what I know as of now. Make your feelings known. I'm keeping a "scorecard" on the preferences concerning dates. Speak up muteys. I've heard from CampDaven, Huntnski, Diwizi, MartySQ, Romin Romin, and Flaggship1. Choice 1: Wednesday, September 5 to Thursday, September 13 -- Choice 2: Monday, September 17 to Tuesday, September 25 - - Choice 3: You name it (give date to date info).

Talk among yourselves.

That's not exactly true Steve. I adhere to a very exacting schedule... every stop... no more than 3 - 3.5 hours drive time, 2.5 hour preference. I like the stops to be spaced just outside of their day trip area. That usually provides something to see or do or explore everywhere you stop.

Anyway... once we know where the UPGC will be, I can start planning the rest of the area visits in 2 - 3 hour journeys. That worked out great in Idanah. It was probably the most fun we've had in a while, but getting out of Arizona late this year put us in vacation mode and I Think you know how I feel about that lol. Looking forward to doing it right next year.

Keep sharing the UP info to the Mutants FB page and let's make this the best GC ever!

UH, you're talking to a person that doesn't even own a cell phone and has never posted on FaceBook, Twitter, or Instgram. Any suggestions on that matter? I could make nice to Mary Ann and she could post on FB.

I'm confused - are you saying our reservations only last a month? They span a full month even though we're not there that long? Please explain this January/February thing for us less informed mutants. And use real dates, like if we go there Sept 5th, when do we reserve?

My dates are flexible. I preferred September all along so either proposed dates work for me. I like Monday till whatever as I can use the weekend as my travel days to get there. I still think starting a GC 2 days after Labor day is risky for travel folk but whatever.

Carl, I read what Papaw Steve said was that the RVM area would be held open exclusively for RVMs for just a month. I other words they will block those sites from any other reservations for 30 days once Marisa agrees to hold them.

I think he is saying that the campground will only hold a set of camping spots for our group for one month. That is a really short period of time compared to others. It means that anyone that wants to go, will have to book their slot during that one month time. After that month, if sites are still available, those that book late may not be able to have a spot close to the group.

OK, OKmunky gave mutants months to sign up and to contact the cg in Oregon.

Once we chose a date and tell the cg of our plans, the CAMPGROUND is giving us one month to reserve sites with our group. After one month, they will give away the sites that they've blocked off for our use and aren't asked for by a mutant. I don't know when we'll call the cg. It will be when we decide on the dates. You have been given 3 choices with real dates. Which do you prefer? When a get a good enough sampling of our mutants as to what dates they prefer, I will tell the cg to reserve sites for those dates. You will then call the cg with your reservation. I thought the info was clear in the previous post. My bad.

Steve, we are living one day at a time, but hope that the UP will be in our future. September would be a preference over August. The dates wouldn't matter to us. Thanks for spearheading this.

LOL! I guess we were all typing at the same time.

I'm on the fence about attending right now. This would add 3,133 miles to my southbound journey -- gotta think about that, but I would definently prefer choice 2. That way we wouldn't be on the road during Labor Day weekend.

I agree, Steve stepped up to the plate and took charge! I love it! Thanks Steve! I have no problem making my reservation whenever it's available to be made, I know I'm going
