Ah Steve, beginning in the Early 1960's with KH-7 that had a 2-3 feet resolution, and then KH-8 in '66 with a less than 4 inch resolution. As the diameter of the optics were reduced from 3 to 2.4 meters, the resolution was 6 inches before degradation. Present day satellites still have a 5-6 inch resolution.

And now....a story.

We got a 90-day temp tag when we bought Gwen, good until 4/20. The dealer said we could get a 1 month extension at the AZ MVD.

So we went to the MVD in Sierra Vista yesterday and they said "no, your dealer needs to get that for you". After 1/2 day of phone tag, reached the dealer who said "no we cant".

Not much sleep last night sweating bullets with visions that we will be illegally driving Gwen 2400 miles back to PA. One fender bender or citation and then what?

So today we go to MVD in Tucson, wait an hour, sweating. Literally!
We get called to the booth and I play it straight. "Hi, we need to get the 1-month extension on the 90-day temp tag".

"Okay" he says, pulls out a form, fills it out, stamps it and says "thats 15 bucks". 2 minutes and we are outa thare!

I am very relieved and very tired and ......really excited about the GC with all of you STMs!

The kimono opens in 9 days!!!!

I seen Barb today, and she was east bound and down, loaded up and trucking, she's gona do what they say can't be done. She's got a long way to go, and a short time to get there. She's east bound, just watch ol Barb and Sena run. I didn't think it was her at first, I couldn't see Smarty hiding back there behind the rig until it was almost going by me. And Barb you didn't even wave! And your windows are tinted so dark, I couldn't tell if you are Sena was driving. About 10:30 am between Wakenney and Hays Kansas on I70.

Wow - she didn't even wave.... Must have been Barb driving cause Sena would have waved!

Don - remember me telling ya about the two days I spent in Wakenney. Pretty sure I have occupied the same lane and place as one or both of ya... Have not been to the casino or mud races at Rosebud in a long time. The next stop was Valentine Nebraska and points beyond. Great driving territory at the right time of year.

The Bird's new radiator, though not yet installed, is now sitting on the driveway. Like any good STM this raises my optimism and I am now sufficiently confident that it will install leaklessly.

Wow Don... I imagine Barb was really concentrating on the road if she didn't see you... and, you must not have made enough nuisance of yourself to get her notice!

Well I knew she was in the area from her last post about overnighting at the Wakenney rest area. I was headed west towards Oakley, and low and behold the first RV I see was her. Then a few miles later I meet another RV about like hers, but no toad at all behind it. I would of flashed my lights if I would of known sooner. Anyway my first real live RVM sighting. She may be in your neck of the woods now, I think she said something about Topeka as the next stop.

Long post warning...

I drove over to CLSP today from McKinney, TX which is north of DFW area. Here is the route GOOGLE MAP ROUTE and what the drive was like.

Wayne...make sure you read through or just skip this part to the end.

We jumped right onto HWY 380 just east of I-75 and headed east to Greenville. Google says the route is about 65 miles and 1 hour and 19 minutes. Once you get east of I-75 the traffic lights thin out within 5-6 miles and you can get things going nicely. Farmersville has some construction on 380 so just watch out for the barriers.

Not much happening until you get to Greenville where you will come to a point where you have to turn right for a block to get on a oneway street for about 5-6 blocks of town. At the end of the one way you can be in either of the 2 left turn lanes because you will be turning north onto 34 and going north for several blocks. As you exit out of Greenville you need to keep your eye open for a couple of those really squirrely intersections with odd angles and everyone comes to a stop. The second of those odd intersections will take you off of 34 onto 224.

224 will take you just north of Commerce and on to 71 for several miles of twisty road until you turn left onto 4775 which takes you into CLSP. When you turn right off of 224 it is a moderately sharp turn but shouldn't be a problem. You then drive about 2 blocks to turn left onto 71. It seems like you are going into a residential area but that isn't really the case. After the right turn that left turn will sneak up on you quickly so no reason to floor it. LOL

As I said, 71 is twisty road at times. Shortly after you get through Commerce there is a 20 MPH curve and then for the next several miles you will have curves ranging from 30 - 55 MPH warnings. The road is not dangerous as long as you pay attention to the curves and drive smart. You will eventually come up onto a T and then turn left onto 4775 and drive that north directly into the park.

I was a tad concerned about the potential for the surface to ooze oil but on the return trip I wasn't so concerned. Certainly in the middle of the summer I might not want to drive that route in case the road did get oily but it is cool enough to not be a problem.

For Wayne and others if they want an alternate route...

From the Houston area Google tosses out 2 possible routes:

1. I45 - I635 - I30 - 24 - Commerce and then as I described above.
2. I45 and then the scenic route via Fairfield - Athens - 19 (through Sulphur Springs) left onto 71 then north on 4775 into the park.

If you take Google route #1 I suggest you stay on I30 and then exit at 19 north bound. There is a Pilot Travel center at that exit too. It may be a tad longer but I suspect you will use less fuel avoiding the throttle work around all those curves I talked about.

One last thought!

After looking at the southern route I think I will seriously consider going via 380 and then east THROUGH Greenville on 302 then getting on I30 just east of Greenville and staying on that until Sulphur Springs. According to google it only adds 6 minutes and 12 miles. I'm betting the lower fuel burn on straight roads will nearly equalize the longer distance.
