Hey Mike,

Tomorrow morning I go in to have all 28 teeth prepped for crowns and have temporary crowns placed. By Friday the permanent ones should be in place. How's that for service? I had a root canal yesterday by a specialist and it was only $180.

There is zero delay in walking over the border. Off season (summer) is the best time to go. No waiting and cheaper prices. Even the RV park is discounted to about $12/nite, tax included.

The only hard part walking the 3 blocks to the dental office. It's like running a gauntlet of crows trying to pick your bones. All of the vendors are hungry for business. I did discover that if I walk in the street only half of them try to sell me something I don't want or need.

Has anyone bought generic insulin from the Purple Pharmacy? It's only $15/vial compared to $25 at Walmart in the US. Sena won't be able to tell me if it's OK or not. I'd like to get a human's opinion before buying.

With the money you are saving, take a taxi. They do have taxis don't they.

From what I have heard, there is very little difference in U.S. and Mexican drugs. I think it is in the inactive ingredients. A friend I have is in the pharmaceutical business and told me that. They wouldn't allow them in th U.S. if they weren't safe for human use. Not sure about animal ingredients, but I suspect lesser control.

Nope, no taxis, but I would take a Pedi-cab if one was available, just to avoid the vendors. Someone enterprising should start a Pedi-cab business in Los Algondones. The drivers could get kickbacks from shopkeepers for bringing them business.

Every thing is within 3 blocks of the border. Parking is very limited and the streets aren't very wide. I actually walked farther on the US side than in Mexico. No vendors on US side, tho, just construction workers.

Sena uses human insulin , Humulin N. I've searched online and can't find any negative reports about buying insulin in Mexico, so I think I'll risk it.

Okay, I give up! My kefir bread starter goes bubbly overnight as it should, but I've done this twice and neither was a resounding success. Conflicting advice online: add extra flour and let raise; don't add extra flour but put in some baking powder and let raise.

The first "loaf" with added flour (rice), could be a lethal weapon. At only 1 1/2" high, it would be easy to grab and swing. Hard on the teeth too.

The second, no added flour, is easier on the teeth but still only 1 1/2" high. As before, no evidence of raising. Nice crust, though.

So what gives, and what am I missing?

What no taxis. Hard to believe they don't do anything for money? I was only in Algondones once and only long enough to look at fake Rolex watches. lol. Don't even remember why I went there. Guess it was just to say have. Maybe I just tagged along with someone else.

Sue, this is the recipe I used. I did not add the baking soda on the second round, but wish it had a little bit more salt, so mught next time.... Son said he used honey.... He also had extra grains so just put them in. Mine was light and nice texture..... I do prefer yeast bread, but it was sn adventure... But i really liked the kefir cheese, and the smoothies are delicious.....
I also just did a half recipe. One loaf as i was saving up for cheese.

Btw, 2 yo grandson will eat the grains out if the jar....

Maybe it is using rice flower.... I use traditional wheat flour...



Kefir Bread
3 cups flour
3 cups kefir
Mix these together well, cover with plastic wrap, and place in a warm area. After twelve to twenty-four hours the dough should be liquidy and bubbly.

At this point beat the dough well and add:
1.5 tsp baking soda
1.5 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp melted coconut oil or butter
3 cups of flour
Beat this together well and knead in enough flour by hand to make a soft dough. When it will hold the shape of a loaf, divide the dough into two piles. Shape the loaves and place them into two well-greased loaf pans. Cover loosely with plastic wrap, and place in a warm place to rise. When the bread rises to the top of the pans, pop it into a preheated 350F oven for about 30 minutes. The crust will be quite brown, and if you knock on the bottom, the loaves will sound hollow.

Thanks, Diane! I haven't given up yet, and will try again, but really need a GF version. I was just making one loaf at a time, too. Good thing!

Cheese is next, but first the bread. Cute about the grandson eating the grains.

Speaking of starting something.... The other day I head a little bell ringing. It was Annie ringing a little blue Mo Bell.... She said when you hear this, you need to come see what I need! LOL!!
