After a grueling 55 mile trip once again The Discovery has landed. Poised a mear 63 miles from Bryce and ready to strike on Saturday.

Dave if your needing to fuel on your way out of Jacob's there is a easy fuel stop at the junction of 89 & 9. There is a couple of stations but the Chevron has pumps on a empty lot next to it that an attendant stays in a small wooden building and was set up for trucks and buses to get in and out easy. $2.60/gal.

Zion tomorrow, laundry today!

This is my friend Stephen's response... so I am gonna quit worrying...

Yes we have snakes, 21 species including 13 species of rattlers ranging from 1/2m (18in) to 3m (10.3ft) and the Coral Snake.

Generally snakes are not a problem. The last nskae I saw was a year ago, a 6 footer, not sure what species. Rattlers are not aggressive as a rule being most active during the crepuscular hours in the morning and evening. Snakes will leave the area given a chance however they will stand and defend. Snakes detect prey by heat and since they moslty eat small critters a dogs heat signature would be too much for them so exit Mr. Longfellow stage right. That said know that most snake bites are very surviable for good size dogs and people depending on the location and circumstances. e.g. a bite to the jugular from a snake leaping at you from a bush is certainly fatal. It is also the myth of Hollywood. Snakes are not goiung to chase you down and bite your buns. Most wildland snake bites are frightened snakes. Since rattlers can meter the venom there is a good chance of a Zero Envenomation bite.

Your best defense against a snake is distance and a camera. As for your dogs, there is snake training usually involving an aging defanged and very pissed off rattler and an e-coillar. They let the dog get a good sniff and a listen to the rattles anh 'bang' a shock. Excellent training. There is also a 'vaccine' like treatment. It is not proof against snake venom but it will give you more time to get your dog to the vet for proper treatment which is very expensive.

Now figure this, I spend a lot of time in snake country around the lakes and mountains here with Djinn and whatever other dogs happen to be in the group. To date we do not know if there have been any snake alerts by the dogs. Certainly there haven't been any bites. We would know that.

Thanks, Marty!
Regarding snakes, in visits to AZ from 1990 to 2011, I saw one snake, a black snake.
In 3 full winters in AZ, I saw one snake, a gopher snake. I would really love to get a pic of an angry rattler!

A funny thing happened on the way to Bryce...

Earlier this evening Annie and I went to do our last minute Walmart shopping. We get home and she says - oh I forgot to get my Potassium prescription. (Lots of mutants with Potassium.)

So I go back to Walmart and as I pull in CR-V Mutant feels funny. I park and a guy runs up and says... Sir you have a flat tire. OK...

I look in my pocket and see I have Annies cell phone and she has mine. Guess what - she isn't answering it.

So Good Sam is sending me a tire guy eventually... and I'm sitting here waiting...

Hopefully we get the spare on and we can get it fixed in the morning. Discount Tire is 15 miles up the road... Drat.

We will still be in Bryce tomorrow... just not sure what the problem is with the tire or how long I might get to sit here.

Be safe mutants.

Glad you weren't going 70 down the highway...and plenty of distractions to keep you occupied whilst you wait. Most wal marts have subway or some such in them!

We had just had dinner... but I won't starve even if I miss a few meals. I do have a case of water with me... Got to stay hydrated!

Hey Muteys!
Rainman Potentater may have a lock on wet, but I bring a Kimono filled with new Magical Mysteries and an Amazing Finale!
Today: a fun break from travel for a day. http://www.nps.gov/elmo/index.htm
El Morro is a place a beauty and history, and the niftyness of folks that "signed in" on the walls. Why did they show up? Water. Why did they leave their signatures for over 3000 years? Heck the Spanish Conquistadors signed in before the Pilgrims bumped into Plymouth Rock. Well, they couldn't text and the didn't drive....
Lots of interesting places near Grants, NM. We must return and hope you can meet up with us here!

Many pictures taken on our side trips to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Royal Gorge train thru the gorge, and our visit to the bridge over the gorge. Enjoy.

This is great, Steve and Mary Ann!
The Gorge bridge was closed due to the big fire before we got there in 2012. Must go back!
