Ravens are a hoot

We are currently hosting at the North Rim and I saw something I have never seen before. At an overlook I saw a raven hanging from what I thought was a string that had somehow hung up in a pine tree. The raven was flopping around like it was tangled up and trying to get loose. I thought it was dying and knew there was nothing I could do about it. All of a sudden the bird turned loose and dropped straight down and then about 3 foot from the ground took off. I came back later with binoculars and it indeed was a string the raven was playing from. Nature never fails to amaze me.

keep watching them...they are one of the few birds who fly upside down on purpose.

When we were at the North Rim, we watched a raven opening containers on an unguarded picnic table. It wasn't long before he had friends join him and they pretty much emptied the food containers. I think they also helped themselves to contents in a backpack that had been left too.

Just finished our trip through Alaska this summer. There are Ravens that make the southerners look like Sparrows. They are certainly one of the smartest birds on the planet and fun to watch.

In Alaska and Northern Canada, they are known as Yukon Turkeys if I recall correctly. And yes, they are really big.
